Just thought I'd post an update for all you who were kind enough to reply to my original query.

I re-measured the case I thought would fit but it was a cm or two over so I bought a cheap case from T***o. Cheap but adequate and held everything I needed.

I was slightly annoyed to see that several other passengers boarded with hand luggage a lot bigger than "permitted" The lockers are indeed small-length less crucial than width and depth but still not very easy to stow bags unless the locker is empty. As both flights weren't full perhaps Flybe were lenient.

The outbound flight was delayed two hours because of snow on the runway earlier at Leeds but the inbound flight left on time. Both were quicker than scheduled. All in all I found it a brilliant service. From home to venue on return in 3 hours compared to abour 8 on the train, and at a fraction of the price!

With Flybe it very much depends where you fly from as to how much they check. Edinburgh outbound is the strictest I use regularly. The tip there is to be carrying your bag in the gate queue, not be wheeling it, as if its on wheels they will definitely check it over.

It was a return flight from Leeds to Newquay
  • Before Flybe stopped their Stansted to Newcastle flights this year it used to be fun and games loading the hand luggage! The luggage bins seem much smaller than the larger planes, I had the knack of inserting mine just right eventually, but many times people would struggle, cases were stowed on empty seats, or taken into the hold, and always seemed to take a long time to get everyone onboard and settled!

They have cancelled the route now, such a pity, it was a life saver for me, living in Norwich and parents in Newcastle - even the drive to Stansted was worth it.

My (independent) booking agent have said Flybe will shortly start to enforce their baggage policy more rigorously. I have no details other than to have been told this.

If this happens then I'll feel very smug using my new cheapo case which conforms with Flybe's policy!

I did put my case into the measuring box and it was OK but no room to spare, so I was surprised to see a couple of passengers each carrying a much larger case with a "Flybe approved" label on it. Mind you, they did struggle to force it into the overhead locker.

I do apologise if I come across as the self appointed "Luggage monitor"!
