XP to Linux Mint questions

Must admit I've been following this thread with interest as I've the exact same situation with an old lappy I've put Mint on... everything working including flash for internet radio!! :D

However, it won't play with my XP-225 printer. I got further this morning by trying a generic driver - lappy can now connect to the printer over the network, but it can't print properly. When searching for a driver mint recons it's found an epson driver for linux but then it just hangs when trying to install it

I have to say the printer is non-essential (as the lappy will probably end up on my desk in work for internet radio purposes), it would have just been a nice-to-have for when it's at home.

so Norman I feel your pain ;):):D

    ...but I still wouldn't resort to W10 :p

I don't know if you've seen this, but it looks helpful. I don't have an Epson printer any more (they are not, to my mind, anywhere near as good as they used to be so I stopped using them). However, the following might be useful (only a year old, so maybe of use):

Looks like someone_else had lsuccess with setting up Samsung CLP 325 with Linux mint http://www.mintppc.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=263

OP - have you tried this method, it looks very straightforward.
  • I've got an HP Officejet 4300 and a Brother HL-2132 monochrome laser printer. Neither were exactly an ordeal to install but it is true that the HP printer was the easier of the two. Thing is though, the Brother has been far and away the more painless to use. I guess that's a law I once heard about...

Trust me, you don't have to be more computer literate to use Linux. I go into it with the approach of "how hard can it be?" - I might learn something (although I usually settle for not being scared of it). Biggest problem with printers is that you only do it every so often: by the time I come to do it I've forgotten what I did.

You may find more help if you join the Linux Mint forum (at https://forums.linuxmint.com/).

Took me so long to write that (doing other things!) that you've probably either fixed it or given up.
I had given up but after typing all that I feel obliged to try. Maybe in a few days I'll have another go. I'm tempted to delete mint and reinstall it or another linux in case I have sidelined what should be a straight forward process while figuring out how the operating system works. There's nothing stored on it. I can import my firefox bookmarks and passwords easily enough.

I joined a linux forum. They suggested I type code into a box :(

Does anyone know what the printer URI is? Once I know this I can work with what I've got.

I'm looking at a box marked "printer properties".
    Settings
    Description. Samsung clp 325
Location. Empty. No idea what to put
Device URI. Empty. No idea what to put
Make and model. Samsung CLP-325 Foomatic/foo2qpdl
Printer state. Processing - Unable to locate printer "cups-server".

I keep getting the message, "Printer may not be connected"

I must admit I have installed Linux based operating systems of various kinds many times since 2007 some of them as a dual boot with windows and never had a problem connecting a printer or needed a printer URL. The printers iI have used have been Epson ones and allso Brother.
  • I think it's URI, not URL that's being asked for. But you shouldn't need to know this.

If you go to the CUPS configuration tool and click on "add" it's the first thing it appears to ask for, beneath "Devices".

But the thing is, it isn't asking for it. It doesn't (or shouldn't) need it. If you wait a short while, a list of candidate printers appears as well, underneath "Devices". You should be able to pick yours up from that list - providing you've installed the driver correctly and providing your printer is connected and turned on. The issue is that, if it's anything like what I'm seeing (and I think it should be), it isn't 100% clear that a great deal is happening after clicking "Add" - the printers are being searched for but that is neither clear nor all that fast. Therefore it's easy to think that you have to give it this piece of information, but no, it isn't needed. You just need to give it some time.

It's not a UPI, it's a URI. Sounds like your printer just isn't being detected or is wrongly detected device type. There are ways to check this by looking at the system logs, but this might be easier - try the unified driver

Well that's odd, the second page of the thread just appeared, and now I can't edit my post. Hence the out of context post, but still give the unified driver a go.
