  • Would this effectively be a takeover of your small business or will there be other clients that would allow you to still run your small business and your partner run the bigger client's new division ?

  • Hi, they are effectively offering my partner our director and our staff employment but ultimately they want my partner. I understood it to be a buyout therefore TUPE would come into effect but no they want him and our staff I don’t have enough technical knowledge to continue the business and people want my partner to do their work.. the work will dry up vet quickly once they know he no longer works for his own business! I’m devastated as IF I don’t take what they offer I’ll be out of work :(

  • It is an offer of employment not a takeover.

You can't stop your partner from exploring new paths, it would be like locking him in a room even if you don't want him to do it.
It;s important to him so he wants to do it, there's time for him to see if he does like it or not and he may change his mind later. You can't keep him away from it because it makes your life easier.

This is possibly the wake up call you need to address what makes you shop. It's a need to mask something, you just have to find out what it is, which involves a bit of soul searching and not blithely wandering along hoping things will change and making other people responsible for your habits without doing some of the work yourself.
I have a friend who does the same, hers is triggered by lonlieness, no partner, no immediate older family and her children are not very family oriented....She's knows this is the problem really, but she doesn't ant to face it it, to make things change.

    Good luck facing yours.

  • So I can’t carry on the business without his expertise. So how do I earn a wage? I’ve faced my demons and just as I’m about to get a debt management plan my income will vanish and believe me there is NO work here :( What will happen I own half of the house and that’s all I have, can’t see my partner being very pleased when they demand I sell my half, he can’t buy it. Downsizing is not an option as prices are astronomical here for a 1 bed flat. I know it’s a mess but I’m now desperate to keep my job and income. I’m a shareholder in the company but he intends it to lie dormant incase he changes his mind.

  • They can’t make you sell your house if you go on a DMP. Isn’t the new employer also willing to employ you? Why don’t you want to take their offer of work?

  • The headhunters will not let me be part of the set up of the new part of the company my partner and I have been working together successfully for 8+ years they expect because I’m a woman I will take an admin job in another department as they don’t want me doing my actual job... OH says he is doing this to help us but it’s feeling like these people have ripped my heart and soul out... I love my job I don’t wish to be a filing clerk on a minimum wage. I’m scared as we won’t survive if my wage gets any lower. Already been paid off due to downturn and had a large wage cut.. I’ll sleep on it and hopefully it will look better in the morning x

  • After speaking with my partner long into the night. He agrees that he wants me part of this new venture as I have extensive knowledge in the admin side. We are going to meet the possible new employers on Wednesday pm so we shall see exactly what is being offered and take it from there. So we are in limbo till then. On a positive note I have got my credit cards under lock and key with no possible way to access them and they are removed from being stored on any site. I e signed up for a sponsored charity walk In June and I’m partaking in a plan to get me healthier and more positive that my darling Mum has gifted me. I’ve got my hands on all my paperwork but just have not been able to get it added to SOA today as it’s been rather hectic. I’ll update with this and outcome of meeting once I know. Cheers :)

  • Okay so we went and saw them yesterday. My partner laid his cards on the table, but the manager had already been thinking about the other managers "gripe" about us being a couple. He agreed because my working background is the same as my partners and I have a good knowledge that its not worth their while training up someone else. The only issue they have is at the beginning there may not be enough work for a full time job, my heart sank. But, he asked would as I am an all rounder in the admin game, be interested in assisting the other departments as and when needed to learn more and therefore be able to cover for others? I am more than happy with this arrangement, they are giving me the same pay and hours (they asked my hourly rate and I told the truth, partner not happy as he aid that I should have upped it but I'm a very honest person) so I am relieved and happier now. We will obviously have a transition period and our new employers are happy for us to answer calls for the old company till we get it all closed down. I have not had a spare minute to find the paperwork buried under the bed to get credit details but this is my priority this weekend. So I will get my SOA on. My partner will be getting a company vehicle and I dont drive so we will get rid of our car, saving nearly £400 a month all in with road tax, insurance etc so that will help massively. We intend to get our mortgage looked at after the 3 month period is up so we can get a fixed rate as we are still stuck with a Northern Rock one and they constantly send us letters and tell us we should move, but we cannot get a new deal as we are self employed. Again that will help matters. I will no longer be working from home so heating and power should drop. I've started taking out cash for groceries and using my list and only getting what I need... unless aldi as they did the other night have liver half price because it was out of date next day, that was popped in the freezer, it can feed us or the dogs! What a difference it makes using cash as you really notice what you have spent and what you have left!
