As long as you update AVG everday with the newest definition files, it should be ok, just relying on antivirus is just silly anyway, there are many things you should do to avoid spam and virus's, disk clean ups, registry cleaners, delete cookies, etc...0

Unless you can provide me evidence that AVG uses less memory running in the background....
I believe the scanner I use Anti Vir is better. I wouldnt say its by far the best.. because it does the job, like AVG and Avast.
Be open about whats on the market.
I'd have to agree with MK here i used AVG for 2 years prior to switching to Anti Vir which i found to be best current free AV that i have ever used not to say that AVG was bad it's just that Anti Vir used less resources and ran much smoother IMHO Anti Vir's only let down was the lack of a mail scanner but as all my mail was online i didn't need one anyhow
Avast is loved by many so i installed it to see what i thought but wasn't really impressed so i went back to Anti Vir
that was till AOL (AVS)Kaspersky came out i wasn't silly i jumped on this chance to get one of the worlds best scanners for free for a year once the licence is up i'm sure i'll return to Anti Vir0 -
Hi thanks for replying. One that stops us being to access sites that would be unsuitable for our children of 11 and 7. Actually I've also just remembered that we seem to be getting pop-ups and adverts which we never did with Norton.
Which browser do you use? Internet Explorer 7, Firefox, and Opera all have inbuilt popup blockers.

Completely agree piston.. Anti-Vir has such a user friendly interface, low memory usage, easy updates etc... Just an all round great experience... AVG can be quite confusing and is proven to NOT detect all known exploits even with latest updates.[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]"The internet is a great way to get on the net."

Hi melb. Look here for free parental control software... http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=5518570 -
I've used and tested Avira Anti-Vir, Avast (used to really like Avast) and AVG, personally I think AVG is the best, as it offers a good round "free" solution, is light on system resources, but it's not perfect by all means, not many are...
In a recent group test in PC Pro (Sept 2007 - https://www.pcpro.co.uk) Anti-Vir just beat AVG on detection rates and Avast was way down in the list, however Anti-Vir didn't scan emails in transit (and I assume the current version still doesn't) and for me that is a weak point.
Esnet NOD 32 got a beating in the test - the best commercial by a mile was Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7.0 -
I'd take that PC Pro test with a pinch of salt, it doesn't seem to correlate with every single other comparison test out there. PC Pro is good but it occasionally does let you down by some poorly done reviews and tests (I've been stung at least once by taking PC Pro's word on things)."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Each to their own! I read a lot of data and reviews on IT subjects (it's part of my job), from corporate reviews to commercial/magazines like PC Pro, and I believe PC Pro in the main to be well balanced (until it occasionally lapses with some rant PC vs Mac, but it's usually for humour). And whenever there is a problem or difference of opinion, there is always a lively debate from professionals on the PC Pro forum.
Kaspersky has had some great reviews elsewhere.0 -
I looked into getting the best AV, and looked at as many reviews as I could (this was AFTER I'd read the PC Pro test) and I ended up getting NOD32 which although doesn't fare well in PC Pro's test it does in everyone elses. Like I said PC Pro is good but it's not infallible. I even once bought a PC based on their review/A List. That turned into a disaster, PC Pro hadn't done a thorough enough check on the company, which was very dodgy and I ended up left with no support for my pc. I'm sure they're well meaning and are usually technically competant but these particular results are not backed up by anyone else which should certainly at least make you suspicious."She is quite the oddball.
