iPhone 5s water damage
My idiot son dropped his iPhone in the toilet , we tried the bag of rice thing but the phone is completely dead .
The phone had no insurance and I am wondering what it might cost to get it repaired , I can get to an Apple Store so would it be best to take it there ?

Contrary to popular belief, the rice trick doesn't work and can actually end up with grains of rice clogging the USB/lightning port or headphone socket. It might remove some moisture but not all, and if any water got onto the board, could be causing it to short circuit. A better option is to surface dry what you can and leave it somewhere like an airing cupboard to warm up and let any moisture evaporate. Leave it powered off while you do this to avoid further damage.
If this doesn't fix the issue then your best bet would be to send it into Apple to have it repaired or replaced. They will then open up the phone and check how badly the water has damaged the components and if it can be fixed. - You say he had no insurance but how long has he had the phone? it should still have a manufacturers warranty up to a year after purchase so might be worth asking. As to the cost - this will depend on just how badly the internal parts are damaged by the water damage. if in doubt call Apple or take it into an Apple store like you suggested and they can advise you on possible costs.
Hope this helps a little (^_^)0 -
The battery needs to be immediately disconnected for the drying method to have any chance so without the correct tools to open and disconnect the battery you're out of luck.
Apple does have a water damage out of warranty replacement charge to replace the handset so it probably is worth speaking to Apple.====0 -
I think I will call into the Apple Store and get an estimate. The phone was just over a year old so not in any warranty .
He can pay up his contract and get a new phone but I don't have an I phone and I might pay for the repair and use it myself .
Thank you for your replies.0 -

Why would he pay up his contract ?
He just needs to buy a phone and either sell at of the contract or continue to use said phone.0 -

From personal experience the rice trick has worked on 3 separate occasions for me.
manufacturers warranty wont cover water damage regardless of how old the phone is0 -
