9% for a DVD sale!!!!!!!!!!

ahem! I haven't been eBay'ing for ages but want to have a real drive this week to try to earn a few quid and just looking at the FVF for DVD/CD/Book sales - 9%!!! When did this happen??? Add in the 3.**% for Paypal and the shipping costs and i'll end up with only a few pence!

I have a few dvd box sets i want to sell - any ideas how's the best way to sell them?? What profit will i make on a dvd box set selling for between £10-15?

9%! I still can't believe it.

  • Like that for video games as well. The greed is getting ridiculous.

5.25% to 9% is a total cop out.
  • Have you looked into a paypal micropayments account?

    Lower % for small payments.

Edit: actually, it's a lower fixed fee for small payments, the % is actually higher, but it works out cheaper. See my post further down.

Why don't you try looking to see if they are likely sellers on Amazon...the fees can be quite steep but you don't pay any listing fees or paypal fees.

Stupid question, but whats that? 95% of my payments I get are less than a fiver, about 99% less than a tenner, something like that might be better for me, but never heard of it!

they changed it the same time they made it cheaper to list in small media section. Its mostly 5-10p to list now i belive. I think it was to many people were put off listing books etc that might not sell.
  • i just had a look at that micropayment account. It seems to only be for US customers and for transactions of less than $2.00 (~£1) so its probably not for me.

Who the hell do eBay think they are charging almost a 1/10 of the final sale price of an item. Don't they realise that for most books, cds and dvds the final sale price is usually less than ~£5 (~$10) so they are taking 50p from each sale AND another 30p from paypal! What a cheek!

Who wants to set up an eBay rival with me!

I have had enough of paypal and eBay this week. They really arent helping little sellers.

Most of my items sell for £3-5, in the health and beauty category, you are forced now to sell with paypal. I avoided PP because of the fees, but now HAVE to use it (how wrong!!!)

So on a £3 item (including p+p) 15p insertion, c.£1.50 p+p, c. 10p FVF and 30p off greedy paypal, = Profit: 90p - worth it?? i think not! Once all my stuff has gone, I will not be buying stuff cheap in shops to sell, its so much work for such little profit.

    I will set up a rival! :)

It's not just for the US - it's just that paypal's help pages are in American-speak.

This page has a lot of good info.

    http://cgi3.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewUserPage&userid=vallombrosa2

    Brief illustration...

How a Paypal Micro Payments Account Works.Say for a Sale of £3.10 (sale price including postage).
    Paypal Micropayments Account. Fees are 5% plus 5p per transaction . 21p. (£3.10 x 5% + £0.05 )
    Paypal Premier Account (Macro). Fees are 3.4% plus 20p per transaction. 31p (£3.10 x 3.4% + £0.20)

So for a Sale (or Paypal receipt) of £3.10 you'll save 10p per transaction. The break-even amount is approximately £9.50 . Any sale below that and you will profit by having a Micro Account. The smaller the sale (including postage ) amount the more you will save in Paypal fees.

It's not difficult - $250, a bit of hosting knowledge, and a great deal of marketing budget to get yourself heard.

Hundreds of people have tried before, but even with the publicity that Tazbar and eBid have, they don't even register on and rankings compared to eBay.

The only auction sites that are in anyway sucessful are niche sites that specialise in one specific area, like adult products, football programmes, out of print books or vintage car parts for example.
