Pushing the dilemma again. 10 appliances is very unlikely, unless they've brought their own kettle, microwave and TV.

Moneysaving is one thing, being a Scrooge is another. We have our granddaughter and partner from New Zealand staying for a couple of months. They only have 4 devices - 2 phones, 1 laptop and one iPad. I don't have a problem with them charging their devices, or using our kettle, or using the shower, or using the washing machine, toaster, cooker...........don't be mean.

A very simple solution for the Scrooge who has supposedly sent in this so called dilemma, Hack into the neighbours electric supply and save even more money by getting it all for free, If they are that tite tell them to do the gas on the other side and water from another, Job done and money saving on all utilities.

Don't they charge their phones and stuff at work like most of my colleagues seem to do? A few years ago I used to regularly be in a major university and you couldn't get down the corridor for gaggles of students sitting on the floor with their phone plugged in to power sockets - you know - the ones marked "For Cleaner's Use Only".


Is there a fear of disconnection here - people think they have to have every device at full charge at every opportunity?

Whilst the cost itself is negligible, I see where the OP is coming from. When my in-laws visit (who I actually really love btw!), they leave every device they have charging all day and all night (except when in use), insist on leaving their bedroom light on the minute it gets dark outside (whether they're in the room or not) and my SIL sometimes has THREE showers a day (she is not a particularly active person - quite the opposite - I cannot for the life of me understand how she thinks she's getting dirty lying on the couch all day).


Cost wise this isn't much for the energy (water potentially a different matter!) but I object to the complete waste. I try really hard to recycle anything and everything possible, reduce our energy usage and prevent waste if I can. (still trying to convince OH that we should get solar panels installed)


I don't begrudge them any of our amenities if needed, but it the lack of consideration drives me mad! Perhaps the OP could tackle it from this angle if it really bothers them?


And yes I appreciate that the usage is quite small. However, if this happens in the majority of households, think how much energy is being wasted in the grand scheme of things.

Ten devices? TEN? Well, even ten devices like phones or iPads will cost only pence. Still. What would they do if there were a fire or an earthquake? Die unplugging them?

But, like others have already said, the cost of charging devices overnight is negligible anyway...
