If the OP was a self-employed contractor there may be some items which could be reclaimed as legitimate business expense. I've never heard of an employee being able to do that.

I just work out my commuting cost and if it's too high for a particular salary increase then I won't accept it.

As for relocation cost - look at all the options: renting out your property and renting nearer the job. Selling and buying. Cost and time for commuting. Cost of commute once a week and renting a room. Commuting a few times a week and working from home x days per week.
Different jobs suit different solutions :) (Oh and FYI I once relocated 250 miles for a temp role for 4 months because I knew it was worth it for my long term career - all at my own cost...)

Has anyone ever rented a cheap room five days per week initially in a new city; when offered a job in a new city? This could be slightly more expensive in comparison to commuting but would save a lot of time.

Assuming Monday to Friday working, you would only need a room 4 nights a week if you can drive from home directly to work on the Monday.

Would you do it for a 45-50 mile commute? I guess I depends on personal circumstances. I am a single person who lives alone.

That would depend on travel cost, commuting time, cost of accommodation etc.

I have looked at Lets available in the area. There are Monday-Friday Lets as cheap as £49 per week (bills included), which is £196 PCM (cheaper than £220 in petrol and £230 in petrol). The added benefit is less wear and tear on the car, short commute (1.4 hours reduced to 10-15 minutes) and learn more about the area to consider moving in the short to medium term. I could go home to my mortgaged house at the weekend.

And also how much of a career step up the ladder the new position offers - is it greater responsibility, are there opportunities for new training or learning new skills....

Companies don't have to offer but they may do it for someone they want to recruit. The best way would be asking them if you were to get a job. You can explain how much it would cost you to commute/move etc and see what they say.
