Scrimp or Splurge - What Is A False Economy?

  • If you spend time outdoors there is no point on scrimping when it comes to coats and footwear. I've got an expensive Barbour, but I expect that to last at least ten years. Also some top end riding/yard boots- you cannot put a price on warm dry feet when you are traipsing across a muddy field!

Otherwise, I buy good quality labelled clothes from charity shops and only use "normal shops" for undies and shoes.

I always invest in good quality walking boots, have had cheap ones before and they don't last. A good waterproof coat if you are outdoorsy. Also my bike - I cycle loads and cheap bikes cause so many problems for a cyclist.

Also good quality dressy boots - I like Timberland. Good tea - has to be Yorkshire tea for me, I would rather do without than substitute it.

Fairy Liquid - so much better than the rest.

A good suite, mine is 14 years old, still looks fab and I love it just as much as when new.

Pleased to see I'm not the only one who appreciates good wool :)

Had forgotten about good bedding and also clothes that will get a lot of wear. I can buy pretty tops/dresses for nights out in cheaper high street shops but things that I wear a lot, like jeans, need to be quality. Although whoever said quality doesn't mean expensive is spot on. I got 3 beautiful pure wool/high %wool jumpers in my favourite discount retailer for the same price as a cheaply acrylic off the high street. They will last until they wear out because I will look after them properly and I couldn't have knitted them cheaper (sadly).

    • Coffee beans - we get Guatemalan Elephant Beans from Wh!ttards
    • Soap - I like the artisanal sort you get from craft fairs, seem to be the only ones that don't aggravate my skin
    • Free range eggs - get these from the farmers market
    • Cheese - also from the farmers market, the stall we go to does all their cheese with veggie rennet :T
    • Honey - farmers market again; since we've been buying local honey, my hay fever has all but disappeared!
    • I also have the heating on as needed; I'm disabled, and feel the cold but can't move about a lot to get warm, so it's essential to keep the bungalow warm.
On the rare occasions I buy any clothing or footwear, it's usually from a charity shop; I hate clothes shopping with a passion, so don't do it often; and I confess I only bother with make-up if I'm going out somewhere other than dog-walking; and I have a SABLE stash of free samples of face cream, which I rarely remember to use! (Stash Accumulated Beyond Life Expectancy) :D

Also candles, i buy yankee or simiar
This is one I disagree with, much as I love candles myself it is literally burning money so I stick to tealights, etc. I can't remember if it was Mrs MoneyPenny or Meryn Somerset-Webb's book that confirmed the same...

For me it's toilets roll, good quality kitchenware, haircuts, shoes, coats, handbags, clothing, underwear and skincare. The list seems to get longer the older I get!

splurge on loorolls, yankee candles, i buy from boots when on 3 for 2 and there triple points promo is on, and get free delivery!! and i adore cashmere!!! never bought new as cant justify it, but also on the look out at jumble sales, chazzas and ebay. usually finding most of my finds in the summer on ebay. same as jeans, i like nydj or amazing woman and buy sh as they are way too expensive new. i love footwear and particularly uggs, again ive never had a new pair, but i do have quite a collection!!! only socks, bras and undercrackers are bought new, thus saving a small fortune!! i dye my own hair, and trim ends as needed. dont own a purse or a handbag, never have!! i find a plasic money bag from the bank serves me well. i dont go on holidays as i have animals, although my dh goes away on motorbike trips with his chums. i am a big couponner. xx

My DH thinks my wool stash is Stash Accumulated Beyond Life Expectancy-I'm trying to prove him wrong.
  • Is that the sign one is getting older - ie SABLEs?:rotfl:

My take on getting older is that I now calculate (on major purchases) whether they will "see me out" (as my mother puts it). So it goes:

    - house boiler (replaced about 2 years ago - should SMO). Worst case analysis replace it once more

    - fridge and freezer (about 2 years old and "quality"). SSMO. Once at most.

I'm starting to do it for smaller goods too. I don't want to find that (come the time of my demise) I've got lots of stuff still there as SABLEs. Not planning on my mothers take on things - the older she gets = the more she gets rid of and, by now, there isn't much left in her house at all and she's telling me with pride just how old some of her clothes are (and...yes....they're still looking good....).
