  • I wouldn't touch a deisal with a bargepole nowadays. Now you can get smaller petrol engines that give you more than 50 mpg and free road tax and lower insurance without the hefty maintenance bills.
    Why take the risk?

My friend has got 425,000 miles out of his Peugeot 406 diesel estate manual and it is still going strong.

My 2.2 150bhp diesel costs me £25 VED and is rated at 65mpg (though that's nonsense of course, like all of them) and I pay low insurance - only a driver with 0 NCB would be fussed about the low initial rate, anyone with decent NCB is going to get decent insurance cover (with the usual caveats!).

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

How do i check or how will i know if the dmf is on its way out?

If you start the car from cold, lift your foot off the clutch and listen. If there is a ding ding ding noise or a rattle and the noise goes away when you put your foot on the clutch, then chances are the flywheel is on its way out.

Theres probably youtube videos of it if you have a look there.
