How to make desktop icons stay put?

I thought I posted this query the other day but I have just been back through 8 pages of this section and cannot find it, so maybe I only meant to! Apologies if I did post and have missed the replies.
Anyway, I am running windows 7 pro and I cannot get the desktop icons to stay in the same place. If I reorganise them they jump back and after an automatic update they are everywhere. Anyone got any advice on this?

Here is your original post :

In addition to my original suggestion, you might also want to RIGHT click on your desktop, choose "view" and take the tick out of "auto arrange icons"0 -

That was your previous thread. Simplest way to find it is to look at your own forum profile and look for the Threads Started By link.
Edit: SNAP! (Your profile link took quite a while to show up for me. Anyway, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it).

you should only have recycle bin on desktop and a pic of ola jordan. most common apps should be on taskbar and rest accessed from start menu"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0

because its untidy and easier to access common apps from taskbar as can't see desktop"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0

You could try a hammer and nails to keep them there.

Well that is surely just your opinion.
Everyone is free to use their own computers in the way that suits them best
I keep lots of stuff on my desktop and that suits my needs, but im not going to tell you that you "should" do that too as there is no reason for me to assume so.
Same as you cant state as fact that only the recycle bin should be on the desktop.
There is no reason for this whatsoever, apart from your own personal preferences
I personally dont like a busy task bar, but im not going to throw out a blanket statement that says "the only thing on the taskbar should be firefox"0 -

Exactly matches my own feelings. I have a 'busy' Taskbar and just a few desktop icons. Many of those are moved and grouped into "Like" folders containing icons for stuff of similar use.
Everyone has their own way of sorting stuff in a way that their minds and eyes can work with best. There are no rules for this, because we are all individuals, with individual preferences. Some people would have us all do things their way, because "it's best." For who?I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

More likely someone will suggest that installing a Linux distro will solve the problem... :cool:0
