When the matter has been resolved take a few minutes to write a complaint to them about the shoddy way they treated you, and the lies they told causing you unnecessary stress and wasted time getting them to accept their responsibility over this, and ask them to explain why they acted so badly, and to compensate you over this

To be fair, I think the OP was originally given the third partie's brokers details and it was them who told him to claim from his Home Insurance.

I think when the OP contacted the third partie's Insurer's directly, they admitted responsibility fairly quickly.

Yep, this is pretty much the case.

FutureGirl. You say to a homeowner, claim on your own house insurance when someone else has damaged the property with a car?

This will increase the homeowners yearly premium and the homeowner would have to pay the excess. I have no idea who insures your house but doing this is certainly NOT "The norm."
