O/S Daily Sunday 13 November 2016

This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” is fine.

Morning everyone

Hugs to those that want/need them x

Happy birthday to those with a birthday x

Still dark, blustery, but not cold - damp underfoot as it started raining yesterday morning about 5 minutes after I'd posted on here that it was dry at that time, it was horrible here - just rained steadily pretty much all day.

DH, DS1 and DS2 still all in their pits - I woke and couldn't get back to sleep, so am now enjoying a cuppa whilst surfing on here. Dinner last night was hot quiche, chips and salad (just quiche and salad for me). Boys are going to mum and dads for lunch as my bro and sil are there, DH and myself are going to visit his grandfather and take him out for lunch - he didn't sound great on the phone yesterday, so we'll see how he is today.

Yesterday was one of those horrible winter days - both DH and myself worked in the morning, we finished at 12 noon and once we got home both decided we weren't going to set foot outside again - we had some lunch - menfolk had pizza I had the last portion of the HM soup, then we just lazed about at home. I also just checked whether to see if my emails seemed to be working yesterday morning and hey presto they are - the advisor at BT said she had done everything she could and there was a problem this end - but after pc being switched off and left overnight Friday/Saturday - I turned it on Sat morning and now it all appears to be working normally again! No "server" problems at all!

Before we go out this morning - I'll be getting the pack ups etc done for tomorrow so I won't have to bother with that when we get back - we may finish up staying for a while at DH's grandfather's to give him some company and see if there's anything he needs help with/we can do.

Keep safe and well x

  • Morning all, thanks for starting us off NMLC.

Little dog had me up at 5.30am, can't get back to sleep so the washing machine is on. Supposed to be dry today so hopefully it will dry on the line.

Usual visit to the outlaws is on the cards, so that is half the day gone. I don't mind because we always have a good chat
Which reminds me I must get in touch with Buck house to get their card sorted for their 65th wedding anniversary on Christmas Eve.

Might pop up to the zoo for a couple of hours later on, that is the beauty of being a member :D

Right off to put the washing out

  • Morning folks and thanks for the thread NMLC. I am now back with you after our break in Cornwall. Been keeping abreast with your news on my phone but it's too fiddly to post on! So many newbies in my absence - welcome all to our little happy band.

Had a lovely breakaway but I shall gloss over the weather! (The worst of it was Tuesday night when we were hit with horrendous gale force winds battering the hotel and hailstones clattering against the window all night!) The hotel was lovely and the food exceptionally good. I feel like Bessie Bunter after all the scoffing I have done. Sensible eating for me is now on the agenda!

Sadly, TRU, we didn't get to Carbis Bay for a trip down memory lane but we did visit other places we enjoyed in years gone by. A day in Truro (how upmarket it has grown!) and a tour of the lovely cathedral. A visit to Flambards, which is just as enjoyable as it always was and, new to us, wine and cider tasting at Healey's Cyder Farm, rounded off with an enormous cream tea. We also had a visit to Cornwall Gold but my purse stayed in my bag!

Back to real life now. All our washing been done (still to iron!) and stocked up on food supplies. Mostly fruit, veg and dairy as I had left the fridge, veg box and fruit bowl bare.

There is a small piece of Aldi's garlic and herb topped lamb to cook for Mr TA's lunch but I am not a lamb fan so it's a chicken fillet for me. I shall do lots of veg and a big jug of gravy so there is, hopefully, enough left to warm up tomorrow.

Have a good day all. It's quite a nice forecast for us so I hope you all have the same. (((HUGS))) to all in need, esp the poorlies and CSARINA I hope you can soon be sorted out. Take care all xxx

    Morning all.

It's good to see you back TA and to read about your trip.

Outside seems damp and grey. Forecast is for rain all day, apart from sunshine at 10am for an hour!

I'm still under the duvet and haven't made plans yet.

    Happy Sunday everyone.

    Morning All

Dry at the moment but rain forecast for most of the day. No washing today, not enough of any kind of load.

Made a hot water bottle cover yesterday and finished off a bag, that's 2 more christmas presents made. Hope to get another hot water bottle cover made today, it's all cut out ready.

Need to go and do a bit of food shopping, the fridge is very bare, I had salmon and veggies for tea last night which was very tasty.

Glad you had a good break away TA.
Enjoy eating your crunchy food tru!

Hope you all have a peaceful Sunday. Take care. XX
  • Good Morning all and looking out of the window its dry,but for how long I'm not too sure, red sky in the distance etc :)

Watched the beautiful Albert Hall Remembrance service last night as usual. My nephew is one of the padres, he on there every year, and this year it was slightly different as when they brought the drums in to set up the Rememebrance alter he was tasked with setting the flags across them while that beautiful lady was singing 'Abide with me' and best of all one of his sons Freddie was one of the flag bearers as well.

So proud of him, as I know as soon as the service is finished he drives the 250 miles back up to Lancashire as he has to be there for morning service and parade this morning. He was out in the Falklands during the war.

I have been to the Albert Hall and seen this live, and the amazing silence that falls with the poppies floating down brings the hairs up on the back of your neck, and a tear to any eye.

Each tiny flower representing a fallen service person, so sad, and the bereaved families who walk so proudly down the steps you just want to hug, especially the young widows and their children.
<< Hugs >>to anyone on here today who too have lost a family member to any war.

Well its another Sunday already, and time just sems to be flying by just lately.Only six weeks until Christmas and I still haven't found an outfit for my DGS Danny's wedding.
He is out in New York again for a couple of weeks working, and tomorrow is his 26th Birthday,I will hopefully Facetime him tomorrow at some point to wish him a Happy Birthday.

Eldest DD (his Mum ) is coming for her Sunday morning coffee and strangled eggs this morning, she will be a bit down, as he is so far away on his birthday as well.
When he and his new wife move out there in the New Year she will miss him greatly, but her and her OH are going out in half term in February so it won't be too bad I think, once she sees they are settled in somewhere.

Right time for a quick cuppa I think

Have a good day everyone and keep warm and dry if possible

    Cheers JackieO xx
  • Hope you have a nice time with GFiL today, NMLC.

Ooh BB I wish we lived near a zoo. We have to go to Paignton for our nearest one which takes two trains and 2 buses to get to!
TA your trip sounds lovely, despite the weather :)
Camelot I'd love to see your makes. I'm currently doing some EPP (English paper piecing) which will take my whole life to finish! Why did I think doing an EPP quilt was a good idea?!?!!?!

We're going to pop to the village ship for some milk in a bit. Then we are going to make some bread, and maybe even some biscuits too. Any recommendations? Then we'll use the bread making as the bases of the boy's homework to describe something using lots of adjectives. I figure the dough will be sticky, the flour messy, water warm and wet, the oven hot, the dough will rise and become golden brown, the smell will be delicious, we'll have a slice warm with butter for which I have no words. Anyway, there will be plenty to describe.

We had prawn pasta last night using spaghetti. I never do spaghetti because the boy moans, but I've decided screw it! I have 2 packets in the cupboard and I want spaghetti. Today we are having duck breast, a lentily thing, veg and either a baked sweet potato or sweet potato fries. I'll sling some parkin in a bowl and top with custard and heat through for pudding. The parkin recipe was a bit disappointing to be honest. Although the boy loves it it never got sticky enough and it wasn't spiced enough. It was Mary Berry's recipe. Oh well.

I decided what to get my brother and his gf for Christmas, then realised that I need something for the boy's teacher and childminder and perhaps something for my boss, although it had best not be homemade marshmallows else I might take inspiration from Dark Angel given my current mood. I've picked out things for all of them and saw a lovely mug with a gingerbread man recipe and picture on that comes with a gingerbread man cutter. The boy adores gingerbread anything - actually ginger anything! And I thought it'd be a lovely gift for him. M&D bought him the Lego I was going to get him, but he has a little set from me, an anime DVD, a small paw patrol toy (£12. 99) a few books and a puzzle as well as PJs, dressing gown and a jumper. I try to not go excessive and the paw patrol toy was the most expensive gift I've gotten him. Because it's just us two I think it could be very easy to spoil him. He did want a Lego train that is nearly £100 and he can bog right off. I pointed out it is for older children, and by getting plenty of Lego from me and my parents he'll be satisfied! We live 30 miles from the shops so I try to get ready early to allow for deliveries if ordering online. I'm lucky as other than the Lego he isn't getting he said he'd just like a surprise. Last year he wanted a doughnut machine, which he wasn't getting due to healthy habits rather than cost, so I made cheerios to look like mini elf doughnuts and left a letter for him written by father Christmas explaining that doughnuts were for special occasions and not an every day food and so he couldn't give him a doughnut machine, but that he got his top chef elf to make him some special elf doughnuts and that he hoped he enjoys them. He absolutely LOVED it and I won all the mum points that day.

    Morning :hello:

I'm glad you had a good time TravellingAbuela! Your holiday sounds like ours always are, you visited the same places as we do :D We always have a tasting session at Healey's, followed by ice cream at Callestick Farm. And I like to use the toilets at Cornwall Gold, even if I don't need to, just because they're so posh :rotfl:

All those DVDs I sorted through a while ago are still stacked up in the hall. Mr tru is home all day today, I'm going to nag him to sort out what he wants to keep. I like the hall to look pretty at Christmas and I need his stuff gone/tidied for that to happen :D

I have nothing planned for today, apart from clearing up muddy paw prints that will appear at various time during the day, lol. Still thrilled at the variety of food I can eat and am already wondering what to have for lunch – chicken with veg (not soft tinned veg, proper crunchy veg!) or ploughman's with crusty bread. Or toasted sandwiches. Oh the list is endless.......... :D

    Morning all
I watched an Am Dram production of Bracken Moor last night, it was very enjoyable and well performed.

I have washing waiting to go on the line this morning & I think hubby may want to go out for a drive or he may want to stay in and play with his video editing software again, I'm easy either way.

I need to look in the freezer for something to make a roast dinner out of, either a chop or some sliced cooked meat left over from a previous joint.

    Have a good day everyone.
    Hugs Hester

    Morning everyone,

Bright sunshine here which is a welcome change from yesterday's continuous rain, we didn't venture too far and I was happy to be at home all day. Feeling a tad better this morning but throats still sore.
DB is bringing Mum over later this morning for the afternoon, will be good to see her after two days away and will give those guys a few hours to themselves.

Welcome home TA glad you enjoyed your holiday in Cornwall, haven't been for years but would love to visit again.

Thoughts are with those who are poorly or going through rough times x

Have a good day all x
  • Morning ((((((((((hugs)))))))))) if you need one. After a carp day weatherwise yesterday it's sunny this morning. Once I get my butt out of bed I have a load of laundry to go out, I will probably have to finish it off either in the dryer is on the airer, there seems to be a lot for some reason.

Lamb for supper tonight, it cost me almost £10 so it will have to do several suppers and also sandwiches, plus using the bone for soup.

A better night last night, OH woke coughing once about 5 am, he should be starting to come through the other side now. Fingers crossed he has kept the germs to himself.

Time to get my butt out of bed and get that laundry on the line!!
