There is nothing in that link to suggest that First Direct would let you withdraw £5k from an ATM.

Yes there is

its nothing to do with the atm, it's the banks who set the limits on withdrawals. you could withdraw 1000 if the bank allowed it.

N.B. Daily limits for some banks have to be reached by multiple withdrawals.

The Banks set the daily withdrawal limit, however the ATM has a set withdrawal limit as well which is set by the ATM provider.

If you call HSBC/First Direct they can temporarily increase your daily limit for you. Not sure what the policy is for other banks. I have withdrawn £2500 from a HSBC ATM in one transaction.

Maybe I'm not clear on what it is you are doubting?
