This happened me a while back, though in Sainsbury's and I was £2 short. I said to the girl who opened up the front and found the £1 coins, plus several others, sitting on a shelf. She simply handed me £2, closed the terminal and bagged the other loose coins up and took them to the service desk.

The problem is some supermarkets don't close the self scans which has issues with change. They rather know keep it open.

A friend that works for a supermarket says since the introduction of the coin slot installed on the coin chute for customers to put in the coins one at a time, there have been fewer breakdowns. As before, customers, particularly men and those doing electricians, plumbing etc grabbed a handful of coins from their pockets (without looking at the contents) and threw it in. Things like metal washers and bits of wire got caught in the self scans and thus breaking them.
