our diesel engine is now running on a mix of diesel and oil and not only does the engine seem to work better but it is also cheaper! i just need to find the cheapest oil supply now! it has halved our price of diesel consumption!!!so if this helps anyone please try it but check first maybe with bio diesel supplier if can cause any other problems with car. we were told with ours we just need to look at changing the filters more often!i dont mind if it saves money! anyone else tried it out lets us know. anyone had any bad experiences too??

  • plenty of fourms out there on it , dont forget to pay the duty on oil as fuel :rotfl:

I beleive to be really viable you cant use todays modern diesel engines , and ideally the older the better. The bad thing if memory serves is the tryglicerides which jelly up , = bad.

If you use a lot theres also mixes , once again dedicated forums on that would be best.

Look out veg oil home refinery , a single unit is enough for most mixing folk and should be aournd 3k.

  • You don't need to pay duty if you use less than 2,500litres per year (recent HMCE regulation changes - a Google search will get you the details). You should probably keep records of dates/quantities/mileages etc. in the very unlikely event that they "audit" you.

There are loads of websites dedicated to running your diesel on veg. oil, again a Google search will get you there.

I think the other poster's reference to a "home refinery" actually means a transesterification plant to turn vegetable oil (a "bio-fuel") into biodiesel (the two aren't the same) unlikely to be necessary if you're running on a diesel/vegoil mix suitable for your engine.

One final point: now that the cold weather is approaching, veg oil will get significantly thicker so err on the side of caution when deciding what percentage to add (use others' experiences as a starting point to decide how much to add).

I would certainly agree with using caution over the percentage of oil you add now that it's getting colder in the mornings - you don't want to end up with it getting thick enough to result in the failure of the injector pump. I was running my Seat (VW engine) quite happily on a 50% mix in the summer, but have now dropped to 25%.
I also note that my local Tesco seems to be cashing in on the demand for oil being bought for fuel. The prices have gone up in the last couple of weeks, and in fact it now costs more per litre if you buy a 10 or 15 litre container than if you buy a 3 litre bottle!

dont try this it is fatal to the engine, it is also considered to be defrauding the exchequer and, like all crimes committed against the Government can result in a jail sentence even first time out.

How poor can someone be to even want to risk that?

Garages who can detect this problem are legally obliged to report this to the local Weights and Measures and Customs and Excise. it just aint worth going to court for a couple of pounds.
:o Keep trying.........................what else is there to do? :o

    90% wrong,

    1. Many people do this successfully thousands of miles on 50/50 in summer and 25/75 in winter. You can have engine problems though, and it is usually linked to a Bosch fuel pump - lucas are ok. (I think that is right you better check about the bosch/lucas thing)

    2. You are legally allowed to do it now tax free up to 2500 litres per year.

Yes, roughly is good enough, mix it in a container with diesel before adding it to the tank.

    process

    1. how big is the tank - look in book
    2. start with a 1 3rd in the tank
    3. get 25% of veg oil and mix in a container with some diesel shake well.
    4 add to tank
5 go to garage and fill tank to the top

Some people don't bother with the mixing/shaking in step 3 they just pour the oil straight into the tank. If and when I do this I will be mixing/shaking it first.

Most cheap veg oil these days is rapeseed, this is fine, so is sunflower and palm oil. I'm not aware of any "not working".
