Broken foot an self employed

Can someone who is self employed(working for same firm for 2 years) and has just broken foot at work claim anything?
He pays National ins stamp by direct debit and tax is taken straight out of his wages but as stated before is not on the books and is self employed.
He has a mortgage but unfortunately couldn't afford to take out insurance to cover such an event at the time. The hospital thinks it will take approx 6 weeks to heal which means no money coming in.
He knows it was foolhardy not to have any cover but could anyone offer an advice?

Why are they deducting tax if you are self employed? Are you CIS?
You may be able to claim ESA

Person concerned is an Electrician . I think most people don't realize that the majority of tradesmen have to go self employed to get work. I you look for jobs they are all through agencies and state you must be self employed. (this is most of the building trades)
He worked jobs where he was being paid through some agencies who took loads of money out of his wages for different deductions (I blame the government for giving full reign to these rip off merchants) and eventually found work where he didn't have to go through these agencies to be paid.
I know he shouldn't be classed as self employed but there are about a dozen more Electricians working under the same circumstances for the same firm
You either take it on board as self employed or you get looking for another job being paid through agencies again etc.
All that has been on TV lately about the conditions of Uba delivery drivers and tonight about Amazon drivers should be classed as employed is exactly the same for tradesman not just delivery drivers.
You can't take any holidays off as you don't get paid and no sick pay or pension contribution from said "employer"
Sorry to rant but it makes my blood boil after all the years that unions fought for workers rights and now the aren't any.0 -

Not trying to get into a debate about whether he should or shouldn't be self employed. You said tax was deducted at source which normally only happens if PAYE or CIS hence why I asked.0 -
I am finding it difficult to get my head round his employment status.
Is he PAYE? If so, is he sure that he is really self-employed?

He was injured at work while working for this company - has the company any liability?

Might he be eligible for ESA?0 -

Probably not in terms of sick pay (unless deemed a worker); but, yes, potentially a claim for personal injury. Please be polite to OPs and remember this is a site for Claimants and Appellants to seek redress against their bank, ex-boss or retailer. If they wanted morality or the view of the IoD or Bank they'd ask them.0 -
He will probably be in the Construction Industry Scheme for sub-contractors. The deductions the contractor he works for takes count as advance payments towards his tax and National Insurance as a self-employed person. The scheme is designed to cut down on tax evasion within the construction industry.
If this is the case, his entitlements will be the same as any other self-employed person.
