what if then, like me, you have no tv, and the only stuff you watch on your computer is downloaded stuff from the channel four website. But your computer has the capacity to play DVDs. would that mean I have to have a tv licence?
Bit of a moot point because i live with my folks who have a tv and licence. but if i move out (ever...) i'll carry on with the set up i have now, with no tv and just the PC.current debt as at 10/01/11- £12500 -
As shell_girl pointed out, you only need a licence for equipment capable of receiving a tv signal. If your PC doesn't have a TV card, you don't need a licence.Proud to be dealing with my debts - DFW Nerd #4910

I've spent weeks trying to convince my son he will need one at Uni (and yes, you need one for your room in halls of residence!)
Is this correct? If so it has changed then. Halls of residence used to be able to have a special one that covered the whole building. Might be worth a check?I want a job that is less than an hour driving away from my house! Are you listening universe?

TV_Licensing wrote:Your hall probably has a licence covering TVs in communal areas, but this won't cover a TV in your room. So, if you're planning to watch TV in your room, you must buy your own licence.

I think this applied to days when halls had a "hall" TV and there was a TV room. Anyone could watch this TV witht eh license bought by the hall.
If you live in a hall or a shared house with locks on the room doors then you will each need a TV license.
Personally I had no time to watch TV when I was a student. Too busy doing other stuff!!0 -
Nowadays you need a TV licence for a room in Halls - eldest DS is the best boy now in his shared house because he has the TV licence, carried it on from being in halls........best to get them into that way of thinking while they're young - I told him I'd come & visit but wouldn't pay the fine when he got caught

As to the computer issue....think I will go hide under a rock for a while until it's safe to come out again!

If we spent as much time lobbying parliament as we do discussing things we may get some where? I have seen so many comments in so many threads about objections to TV license!unsecured Debts at [strike]August 2007 £79,984[/strike] September £79,579 [STRIKE]Snowballing date July 2013[/STRIKE].

You do realise that programming streamed live over the Internet counts as a TV signal? As shell_girl also pointed out, an “on demand” service isn’t live, so that doesn’t need a license. My current understanding is that a live Internet stream is ok, provided that that programming isn’t also being broadcast into the UK at the same time. For example, as has been pointed out before, a live stream of Mongolian yak racing should be ok, provided it isn’t also being relayed by Sky Sports. As shell_girl pointed out, you only need a licence for equipment capable of receiving a tv signal. If your PC doesn't have a TV card, you don't need a licence.
The problem is that the BBC is bigger than us and has more resources to throw at lobbying the politicos. It’s unfortunate that the reason it has lots of resources is because it’s got all our license fee payments. The best thing for us to do is stop doing things that need a license. Live yak racing it is for me. I’m just off to put down my bet on the 2:30 at Ulaanbaatar…If we spent as much time lobbying parliament as we do discussing things we may get some where?
