TV Licence rant

Hi
I know there isnt anything I can do about this, but just wanted to let of steam!
After nearly 4 weeks of living without a TV licence, I went to the local newsagents and bought one using PayPoint.
I bought it on the 16th September 2007, but the receipt I was given shows an expiry of 31st August 2008.
I had, wrongly assumed that if you pay for a year, you receive a year!. However, a stroppy kid I just spoke to on the phone from TV licensing told me it "doesnt work like that" and I only get part of the month, so effectively I have paid for 12 months, but only valid for 11 months and 14 days.
He didnt sound too impressed when I told him that if I had known that I would have waited until the beginning of next month to buy it!:p
I am not happy, and yes, I know there is bound to be someone who says "you got 4 weeks free so stop moaning", but I hate paying for my TV licence anyway, so this has just annoyed me a little....
Rant over. Thanks for reading.

It works the same as car tax just one of those things!0

I've given up with the tv licence. I live on my own and spend £20 on dvd's and borrow everything else. You can watch catch up shows on-line now so it seems like a waste to me! plus have you seen the !!!! that is on recently!

Hear hear Danni!
I looked into getting a tv licence for me and my boyfriend when we moved out of a shared house but looking through their website it looked like you paid for the whole year in the first 6 months. What a con! Didn't think it was worth it anyway since we hardly ever watched tv. Got rid of it now and just watch dvds on our shiny new mac and have joined a rental club.

touche! Good point Al Mac... i can see both sides of the debate. And when you think Road tax is the same, it's maybe just one of those things you have to take on the chin.
I can see with road tax cause they have to print the discs valid from month to month (mine is due at end of this month, yuck!!!) but you would think your TV licence could start on the date of payment.....
Now i think i'll just carry on sitting on my fence here.......
) I'm just a seething mass of contradictions....(it's part of my charm!)0 -

If you think you are avoiding getting a TV licence by not having a tv & watching online, think again.....
"You need a TV Licence to use any television receiving equipment such as a TV set, set-top boxes, video or DVD recorders, computers or mobile phones to watch or record TV programmes as they are being shown on TV" Quoted from TV licence website.
I've spent weeks trying to convince my son he will need one at Uni (and yes, you need one for your room in halls of residence!)0 -

They are lucky the technology is not current otherwise the payment could have been backdated and paid off the last 4 weeks he didnt pay, incorporated a small fine for breaking the law and even then rounded the month down :rotfl:0 -

So, for example, if you bought your annual road tax/licence on the 27th of the month, you would lose 27 days!.....I wonder how much extra money is made from us having to pay for days we cant actually use? does that question make sense?0 -

I think I would probably have to seriously question my need for a telly at that point!0 -
It does which is why some take the car off the road or plan a purchase for the beginning of the month. Its a system we have all learnt to live with but its a valid question!0
