    I generally find you're better off rolling your own than using COTS NAS boxes, which are overpriced and underpowered.

    Ok let's deal with that

    HP 1610t proliant which is a reasonably low power Celeron (35W CPU) microserver:

    Idle = 20W

    Peak = 42W

    DS216j

    Idle = 7W

    Peak = 15W

    Let's assume idle for 5 years and 12p/kWh

    HP = ((20 x 24 x 365 x 5)/1000) x 0.12 = £105.12

    DS216j = ((7 x 24 x 365 x 5)/1000) x 0.12 = £36.79

    Electricity saving = £68.33

    Now let's assume full power:

    HP = ((42 x 24 x 365 x 5)/1000) x 0.12 = £220.75

    DS216j = ((15 x 24 x 365 x 5)/1000) x 0.12 = £78.84

    Electricity saving = £141.91

    Of course if you build using higher watt CPUs then the electricity use and price differential goes up as well. The dual ARM of the DS216j is more than capable of acting as a file/media server but obviously won't be the choice if you want to render 4k streams. Who wants to render 4k streams anyway ?
    Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.

    Exactly.

    All I want is somewhere to store backups of my files and give me access from any of my devices.

    It's a bonus that it can also stream pictures, music and video to devices on my network. It can also do a lot more as I'm finding out as I get to know it better.

    It does all of that and it's in a small box not much bigger than two 3.5 inch disks that sits on the desk behind the monitor.
    One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.

    I went for the DLINK 340L, 4 Bays.

    Depending on your use the software maybe lacking, but it does exactly what i want.

    I can run Jdownloader on it and it means i can power my PC off and still download and unzip/unrar if needed.

    I wouldn't go for the Dlink if I were in the market for a 4-bay, slow single core Armada 370 for £180 on Amazon. It's absolutely thrashed by the HP 1610t proliant in every department which is only £126 and has the same power envelope, approximately 40w.

    Put Linux, BSD, Windows server or even Synology DSM (XPEnology) on it and you have a far superior system for less money, if you are prepared to do a little self configuration.

  • Your problem with the NAS was probably the RAM chip.

    I have 7 NAS units used for archiving, but day to day I find even one uses to much power. 4 drives, even on spin down was using loads.

    So I mostly use 4tb external disks which go on USB, I then archive from there to NAS which I turn on for the purpose, I also upload to cloud services like mega.nz which has 50gb free

    I did get a new diskless netgear off ebay for £32

    I would only recommend Synology for a biz usage
    Thanks, don't you just hate people with sigs !

    When i wanted one there was nothing with 4 bays that came close to the DLINK on price. Best part of £100 more for everything else even the Synology 2 bay units.

    I just wanted something to plug in and use, couldnt be bothered to build a system or tinker with the OS etc.
