Fighsback's link to the server on ebuyer is certainly interesting but it's a bit of overkill for me and, for what the Synology is going to cost, not worth the extra expense.
What extra expense? The HP Microserver is cheaper (after cashback) than the Synology. On top of it it's also more flexible and powerful...0 -

I missed the cashback!
That's a really good price but it's still too big and something of an overkill for what I need. One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -

no such thing as 'overkill'...
it's called "future proofing"

I prefer Linux software RAID as I'm not tied to a propriety HW RAID controller if it goes bang.
Seen controllers go bad, and a new controller's firmware may not recognize the old drives.
With zfs, the drives are fully portable and can be plugged into any new system and it will work.
I would do this rather than buy a bespoke box.0 -

Synology use Linux software RAID so easy to rebuild without controller worry.Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.0 -
Just thought I'd report back on this thread.
After doing my homework most of the reviews agreed with Fightsback, the Synology kit came highly recommended so I ordered a DS216J.
I have been running it for a while and it is a wonderful bit of kit.
I have a copy of my music on there which it streams to my various devices including Kodi. I've also put thousands of photos on there and can look at them from just about anywhere but having set up Kodi to use it I can view them on the TV.
It is fast, flexible and easy to use. I am very happy with it and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone who needs a good NASOne by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -

I generally find you're better off rolling your own than using COTS NAS boxes, which are overpriced and underpowered.0

My DS112J has performed sterling service for the last 4 and a half years. I think it is quite literally the best piece of electronic equipment I have ever bought.0
