What can I expect from Tesco with regards my HUDL V1 power problems ?

Hi all,

I have got a Hudl V1. Bought it a few years ago with my Tesco clubcard vouchers so it effectively cost me nothing.

I recharge the battery regularly. Trouble is that the battery live is decreasing. I barely get more than 4hrs from the battery nowadays. I primarily use the tablet to read newspapers. I don't do streaming and don't often play games on it.

I phoned Tesco this morning to complain. They have said they will contact me within 72hrs to discuss what are my options but they have asked me to find my receipt. Not sure why but I will have a look for it. Pretty sure that I will find it.

For info I am fairly sure they sent me a free replacement a few years ago. I still have the box that the Hudl came in.

I know that there has been a few problems with the Hudl 1. For example battery life not lasting for long, problems recharging, etc.

Anyway......my question is what is the best and worse that I can expect from Tesco. Ideally I would like for them to replace it for free but I appreciate that I may not get that.

Please advise.

Thanks.

Absolutely nothing, if you expect a perpetual guarantee until time immemorial then you are in for a rude awakening.
Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.

You should really post this in the Consumer Rights section but I'd suspect it'll depend on exactly when you made the original purchase. They may offer a repair or if it's been a few years or more then they may just try and wipe their hands leaving you to rely on your statutory rights under the Sale of Goods Act.

Battery is a consumable and you have had a few years use .I don't see how they are liable for anything at all .

Given the problems many had with the Hudl 1 I suspect the current value is approximately £0, so you may get an offer of a full refund of that value. Take it to your nearest recycling centre and buy something more reliable.
  • Really everyone ? I have escalated to the CEO now and will wait and see wot he says.

Worst case is that I will continue with my Hudl until it becomes totally unusable. Like I said before it cost me nothing so I have had great value.

Now back to the Apprentice and I suggest Lord Sugar for Prime Minister; especially after Trump the other night. Where is the rooster when you need him lol ?

Make sure you haven't accidentally got Bluetooth running in the background.
Also, turn off adaptive brightness and adjust the display brightness to a lower level than maximum.
Both of the above are battery drainers.

I have heard of problems with HUDL ports not charging or breaking, not so much about battery life.

So here is the lowdown for ANY product.

The orignal Sale of Goods Act says a product must be PQT

    fit for Purpose
    of reasonable Quality
last for a reasonable length of Time

    Examples

A washing machine that does not clean clothes is not fit for purpose, basically if you buy a product to do a specific thing that it is supposed to be able to do and it can't then it is not fit for purpose.

Reasonable quality can be a little bit subjective but if the thing you buy starts falling apart, or say a TV has an awful picture, then it can fail on quality.

Lasting for a reasonable period of time can also be subjective and might be related to the price of the product, for example a £110 TV being sold last Christmas might last 3 years or the warranty period offered by manufactuer if greater. Just remember that your contract is with the company you bought the item from not the manufacter so you can decline to be referred to them if you do not like what the manufacturer is offering. On the other hand if you buy an all bells all whistles £2500 TV you can reasonably expect it to last 10 to 15 years and again regardless of the warranty, it is the law that matters and your contract is with the vendor not the manufacturer.

What you can expect, well Tesco might argue that the battery is a consumable item and that Lithium batteries lose their life. That may be true but you might argue that if the battery was consumable it would need to be swappable by the user.

The fact that they replaced it a few years ago does not mean the warranty restarts, it runs from the date you bought it.

The fact that you got it using Clubcard points is not the issue, I would argue that you spend 100 times the price to get those vouchers.

You say you got this a "a few years ago " and you say they replaced it "a few years ago " so either it failed early in its life or you have owned it for 4 years??

So why are they asking for the receipt?

Well it will work like this, they will say how long they expect a product to last, say 5 years (60 months).

To keep the maths simple let's say the product costs £600 (although I know it was far less).

Let us assume you have had the unit for 3 years (36 months).

So they take the value of £600 and divide it by the life expectency of 60 months and come up with £10 a month. They then say you have had 36 months of use of it so £360, they deduct this from the £600 and offer you £240 towards a replacement or as a refund.

Now you might disagree about the lifetime of the product, if a company does that to me I ask them to confirm that in writing, I then tweet an image of that on their twitter page in response to every corporate post they make and somehow relate it to the tweet so it is not spam.

    So the maths is

RRP - (RRP / Lifetime) x (Months used)

Now they may give you an option to have the unit repaired, usually a swap out so you lose any data.

So now you have an idea of how things might go.
Thanks, don't you just hate people with sigs !
