If three tyres needs replacing, I'd replace all four at the same time TBH.
Depends on the fourth. If it's near-new, then keep it. Maybe swap the spare (likely to be old, manky, probably already been swapped around) out and put that fourth one as the spare.

It's frustrating because my partner is in Prague and he isn't here to ask, I don't know if the tyre is near-new or anything like that.

Check them yourself. There should be 1.6mm of depth in the grooves across the width, bare legal minimum. Less than that is three points if Mr Plod catches you, and less than about 2-3mm starts to drastically affect grip and braking distances.

    You can do a quick-and-dirty measurement with a 20p

The border's about 3mm - so if you can see more than a small proportion, your tyres are badly worn. If you can see more than half, your tyres are illegal. The driver is the one who's committing the offence, no excuses.
If they were that bad I have no idea how it passed it's MOT in September.
September was two months ago. Tyres wear as they're used.

Thanks for that. I'm only baffled because both my partner and I get the train to work. So since it's MOT at the beginning on September it's been driven maybe 5-10 times? I'd rather be safe than sorry regardless.

Thanks everyone. The tyre hadn't lost any pressure between half 8 this morning and half 12 but have got someone to check it out anyway. Local garage (not Kwikfit) has said that the front two tyres are bald and one of the rear ones needs replacing as well. He's quoted three tyres for £272. What an effing nightmare. If they were that bad I have no idea how it passed it's MOT in September.

I haven't agreed to it yet, going to check out this black circles thing. Thank you.
You may as well get all four done in that case. Look out for fitters that do a 25% discount on 4 tyres, essentially a buy 3 get one free deal. Also, get the sizes and look on blackcircles for a quote.

The answer to that would be to make sure your OH takes a bit more notice and checks his tyres regularly. ;)

If the tyres are as worn as the garage say it will be obvious just looking at them. That makes me suspect the garage is correct as it would be obvious he was fibbing.

Get them done ASAP. Ultimately the tyres are the only thing holding you to the road. The weather isn't great either and performance in the wet can drop off quickly.

OP - this isn't a dig at you, but it amazes me how many people can have no idea about things like this.

...which is precisely why it's been part of the driving test for the last decade and a half.

But I bet the last the thing most of the drivers passing their tests in this time do is check tyre and levels regularly.
