Switching to BT

I currently have standard bb, phone and tv via sky for which I'm paying around £95 a month for. One way or another I need to substantially reduce this.
Looking at the BT site I can get a decent Tv package and much faster bb for £43 a month (albeit with some initial charges).
I know I could talk Sky down but one of the reasons I'd like to change is to get the better speeds.
A couple of questions. We Don't have a modern master socket for the phone line, presumably we need this for bb, is this BT will fit for free?
And Do BT still operate hidden contracts? I left them many years ago and it cost me £150 because of a hidden contract I knew nothing about.
Thanks

Wow, phoned BT today to ask a few questions with a view to switching and the girl responding couldn't be less enthused.
Not put me off completely but her 'if you buy it and it doesn't work you are f****' attitude caught me off guard.

    YES

Dont know what a hidden contract is . The BT contract is there to see .Its 12 18 or 24 months and at the .

As to buy it and not like yes its up to you to choose the package you want . But not work is a different matter entirely .
  • I signed up to BT infinity 1 unlimited back in August. It's a 12 month contract that doesn't renew on its own. If you go for infinity BT may change the master socket or they may just send you a filter that plugs in to the existing socket, just like standard broadband connections have.
  • I recently subscribed to a BT internet offer featured on MSE. Although my wife confirmed over the phone when ordering the new package that it included a recordable box set, a standard box arrived. We had been told that a replacement set would be sent last Friday. This hasn't happened and they will not send a replacement box. We have spent about three hours on the phone to find that they didn't log previous calls and complaints and they will not honour the deal. We are now leaving BT and they want to charge us £375 for early cancellation. Nightmare.
    Anyone else had similar problems?

Thanks for the reply, although it's not the impression I got from them today, I expected to have placed my order by now but I've spent the evening looking at the alternatives.
I tried to explain how the phone line enters the building and the rather antiquated box and extensions all she kept saying was 'that's your mater-socket', I just gave up in the end.

As for the hidden contract I assume it is a practice that BT have stopped, it cost me £150 to leave them a few years back because of it.

I'm going to pay for a Ex-BT engineer to come and have a look.

There is a penalty, as with Plusnet, which though not hidden , is not headlined. This is a payment when you leave if you go to a company such as Sky or TalkTalk, that uses LLU. It was introduced not very long ago.
  • hi just read this thread, I'm thinking of going to Plusnet... What's LLU

LLU is is local loop unbundling.

It is where a company takes over the wires at the
BT exchange and installs there own kit to supply telephone and/or broadband services that are not wholesaled from BT.

SKY and Talk Talk are the biggest providers that do this but some other smaller isp's do this too.

Plusnet use BT wholesale so no LLU involved.
