By the way when does FF and Chrome support end for XP ?
Ironically enough, Chrome stopped supporting Win XP this time last year https://chrome.googleblog.com/2015/11/updates-to-chrome-platform-support.html
Turns out Firefox is a similar situation - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1108395
Avoid XP. Avoid it. Don't use it. I've got Win 10 running on a clapped out old laptop and it's ok (ish).
You can get something like this and pop on a monitor - http://www.ebuyer.com/760712-refurbished-dell-optiplex-380-sff-desktop-dccyif-e33-4-160-w7p
I hope you weren't expecting a PC AND monitor for under £1000 -
No idea, but according to you, support ran out on my setup two years ago, and I've had two years without incident. Even Malwarebytes reports nothing of concern.
Let's leave the readers to decide whether you're making much ado about nothing or not.
So on the basis of your logic, just because you haven't bothered to lock your doors and windows (get it ?) for the last two years and you haven't been burgled in that time means that you are not at a greater probability of being burgled in the future ?
Gambler's fallacy I'm afraid.
By the way chrome support ended with v50 in April this year:

Firefox support is expected to end March 2017:

Hi,
I'm looking to buy a computer.....probably second hand which will allow me to search the web and possibly look at some youtube videos. That sort of stuff. So, someting pretty basic really. Could you guys suggest to me what I would require in terms of memory and hard-drive etc and which operating system. Oh yes, I wouldn't have to get anything extra such as keyboard and monitor etc. I'm looking to purchase something reasonably local off ebay. Thank for your advice.
Ram 4 to 16gb potential memory
DDR3 (ddr3 is cheaper than older memory) Use Crucial.com to check capacity
500gb to 2TB hard disk - Low disk space not an issue as you can always go external
Low power quad core cpu or modern 2 core (compare CPU''s at CPUBOSS)
e.g. http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Celeron-N3050-vs-Intel-Celeron-J1900
I have no idea where you are so local not possible to determine. You may miss good deals by restricting yourself by geography.
I would go for a professional refurb Acer Aspire Desktop XC range (603 or above), with an Intel Quad core CPU such as J1900 or better AVOID AMD. These have HDMI port so can be a great living room media centre attached to TV. I got a couple a few months back were like new. Second hand is going to charge delivery.
This one profession refurb costs £70 has 500gb disk 4gb ram and J1900 FREE Delivery
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/311733141591
This one asks £92 with "make offer" has 1tb disk 4gb ram and Celeron N30250 dual core It says it comes with Office, I would check it is full and legal version.

You can even get them from Tesco, this one is an auction, currently at £56 plus £5 delivery

Thankyou all for some great suggestions there.0

New PC

If you go for a used one, personally would suggest £120 with 2nd gen i5 quad core with 4 GB RAM.0 -

Those computers don't have any software installed at all. I wouldn't be too confident about the install and how much would say Windows 7 or later and MS Office cost?0 -
If you only need basic Office stuff - e.g. you don't need VBA - then Linux Mint + LibreOffice will do the basics and is free. Mint should be easy to install on any mainstream hardware.0

OK thanks. Any more advice?0

Do you prefer a laptop or desktop. Dell have a Black Friday sale next week where you can pick on of their more basic laptops for £129, although it's a basic Celeron processor it's perfectly adequate for web browsing and basic office work.

Alternatively, if you're only going to be surfing and viewing YouTube videos, have you considered a tablet? There are some cheap ones about for sub £100.0
