I personally just use defender built into windows, but some people like to see a 3rd party program installed

Bitdefender free usually scores quite well in the comparison tables.
And its not so much of a resource hog ..

Dont pay for one, and steer clear of anything Norton

ESET is what i personally use and run on my networks as well.

But if you're a home user, then Avira is decent and free. Get yourself a copy of Malwarebytes alongside it to run once every other month as well.

Avira came out top in some recent tests run by a reputable company

Its free and paid for, you get a few ads on the free version but not too intrusive to make a difference.

AV-Comparatives usually has windows defender as around the 95% mark on its Real World Protection tests .Higher marks do tend to vary over the years with Eset and Kaspersky long term table toppers .
95% meant 5 % got through the windows defender .
But the majority of attacks nowadays are via the user clicking a link .
