Want to change from Virgin Media

I am currently with Virgin Media for TV, Telephone and Broadband. However I have had a number of times where the telephone goes dead and it requires an engineer to fix it. This has now happened 4 times and so I am awaiting another engineer to fix this. However I'm getting pretty fed up with it (along with having to pay to make calls on my mobile instead) and in addition the cost has gone up a lot in recent years. Currently I pay around £45 a month plus call costs for broadband, telephone and the most basic TV package (basically Freeview but through cable) but this does not seem such a good deal when compared with other suppliers any longer. I am happy with the Broadband but I think now other suppliers offer fibre rather than just ADSL Virgin is not really any better than the competion any longer. Is that the case?

Virgin are now also nagging me that they want me to have a Hub 3 which requires another engineer visit!

However it seems it is not possible to switch from Virgin Media without paying installation for a BT line. Is that the case? Are there are any suppliers (other than Virgin Media) that will offer a service over my current lines? Or do I have to pay an installation fee if I switch?

You wont or cant get another provider on the virgin media connection, i presume your on fibre ? If you are then its either stay where you are or move to a provider who will need a new line installed so that means BT, Sky, Plusnet etc these all require a BT line or openreach to visit.

Virgin offer faster speeds than sky and BT but I dont know what your area is like for speeds from the 2 or even if your area is able to get fibre from Sky and BT.

Depends what kind of speed you want, waste of money paying more than you should for Virgin if broadband is cheaper/more suitable speed for you.

Have you complained to VM about the issues you have had ? Asked for a discount for the issues ?

Important question is are you out of contract, use it to your advantage then. Call them up on 150 and choose the option for leaving and explain your unhappy etc.

Virgin Media don't have to allow other company's to use their network, so don't allow it.
To get service from someone else will require a 'new' line from a provider that uses Openreach's network, that could be BT, or Sky or many others.
If you need a 'new' line then dependng on the provider, products taken (Phone only or phone & broadband and possibly TV) and initial minimum term contract the installation cost for that 'line' vary's between £0 and £100+...but if you take line and broadband from the same provider and possibly take an 18 month contract you may find a provider that will waive the install cost or reduce it to a relatively small amount
If your area has FTTC or FTTP your broadband speed could be comparable to what you get with VM

That's a shame, but thanks for the information.
  • Take a look at Talk Talk as we reduced our bill by over 60%. There is a £25 install fee and the tv packages are only a 1 month contract

I regard VM as con artists as we had so many issues with them and we found friends were paying far less for the same package.

Also do be careful to record phone conversations when you cancel. We cancelled a VM mobile phone and they claim not have to have a record of it, despite 2 of us being in the room at the time of the call.
They are chasing us for further charges months after we cancelled and although they promise to look at the issue they never do. This has resulted in an unfair default on my OH credit file which we are now fighting to remove. Good luck
