Buying travel insurance after travelling!

I am in the USA working at a Summer Camp. I left the UK on June 7th and was covered by insurance through the organisation I went on my exchange with, however now my insurance with them has expired and I am in the highly scary situation where I am in the USA with no medical insurance!!! I am here until October 20th. I am really really struggling to find any companies that will allow you to buy travel insurance once you have already travelled, I am just wondering if anybody knows of any companies who allow this, or if anyone can advise any other way of getting myself covered. I am really only concerned about the possibility of a huge medical bill in a serious accident and really dont want to run that risk - if anyone has any ideas I would love to hear them. I have emailed a number of companies so far with no success.
Thanks for any help,
John

Most of the Travel Medical Plans on insuremytrip can be purchased after departure.
There is an entire section for Travel Medical Insurance.
Here is the link http://www.insuremytrip.com/myquote-medical-1000-0-0-0.html
After visiting the site, I suggest calling to verify the plan you found is okay to purchase after departure.0 -

Did you contact your company who gave you J1 visa? I was working at summer camp in usa 4 times (via CCUSA &ICCP) and there were always an option to pay extra to extend theire insurance. I belive it should be the same with camp america or bunac. Who was your sponsor organisation? This will be mine in 2009 member's club no. 359 :happyloveCash £1000+, Holiday, Handbag

yeah, I'm sure if you contact the organisation you travelled with they should be able to organise to extend your cover (though I'm sure when I did BUNAC they covered you until your return flight anyway, even if you travelled for a few weeks...?)student100 hasn't been a student since 2007...0

Thank you all so much for the advice. I found a policy on insure my trip and called to confirm it was OK, and in 2.5 hours I will be insured!
I am with ICCP, I'm amazed to come accross someone else who has been with them, anyway, my initial policy in theory is 12 weeks, extendable to 16 upon request (this is roughly now expiring), I sent an email to ask if I could extend and got no response, I also asked to pay to extend beyond the 16 weeks and got no response. But I had already established a long time ago they are the most useless company in the world, I expected nothing less, and just thought it better to cut my losses and buy my own.0
