How is the situation in Goa/Kerala? I have read that it was worse in the north and the south was more relaxed about it.
Can you get money at Goa Airport? and how many places do use credit card?
I was planning to go to South India for a month in January and was really excited about it but now I'm a little bit worried and wondering if I should go somewhere else...
Some people are having an horrible experience but others are saying it isn't that bad, so it's very hard to get an idea from abroad...

Check out the threads on the Goa board on Tripadvisor.
Lots of information about changing money on there from people who are actually there right now, I guess the Kerala board will have similar information.

A key question: do you have a way to get an Indian SIM card, or are you happy to pay roaming charges?

My friends in Hyderabad are coping: there is a mobile app that tells you which ATMs have money, and you can use Uber to get to them quickly and easily. Once you identify a functioning ATM you have about half an hour to get to it before it runs out of money.

The process of getting a SIM card is rather complicated, and as a foreigner I found it took as long as three weeks! So unless you have a local friend willing to lend you one, or get one for you in their name, life could indeed be difficult. (These apps work if you have access to wi-fi, although an awful lot of Indian hotels have wi-fi that does not actually work, but do not work on a computer.)

I'm off to India at the end of the month, I normally use ATM's though I do have US dollars left from a previous holiday which I'd like to change. I like to get local currency as soon as I can when I'm away, has anyone been very recently and if so am I likely to experience any problems or has everything settled down now?.

Check out the India board (or your specific destination) on Tripadvisor.

You'll get advice from people who are there now and probably locals too.
