Hi,
I am considering seeing a Psychiatrist in England in the private sector as a Scottish resident. Trying to establish the cost of having any prescription dispensed in Scotland.
Anybody able to help as I am baffled ? Also could the Psychiatrist write to my GP in Scotland tell him to issue as script for required drugs?
Thanks

Hi,
I am considering seeing a Psychiatrist in England in the private sector as a Scottish resident. Trying to establish the cost of having any prescription dispensed in Scotland. You pay the price of the specific drug - and as each of these are different, that would be dependent on any prescription you get. A pharmacy would be your first port of call.
Anybody able to help as I am baffled ? Also could the Psychiatrist write to my GP in Scotland tell him to issue as script for required drugs? That depends on the drug(s) you are privately put on - if they are not NICE cleared and the GP doesn't want to prescribe these off label, then no, you cannot tell them to issue it - as ultimately whoever signs the prescription is responsible for you taking those meds.
Thanks
Why would you need to see a private psych? If it is waiting list based, then perhaps the GP may agree to it, but it is rare for it to happen as noted above. it has to be in NICE guidelines, as well as within NHS budget restraints, and if it is a particularly expensive drug you don't have much chance of getting on an NHS prescription.
Location wise, as long as they are professionally registered and insured to practice, I can't see this being a barrier.
Perhaps if you gave more information (such as if you are looking to get a specific drug, or drugs) we may be able to give a more detailed answer.
But in short, its unlikely you would get a private prescription over on the NHS without significant reasoning.0 -

I would say ask rather than tell0 -
I'd suggest you speak to your GP about it first. I was thinking about seeing someone privately and my GP said there are some in particular that he wouldn't accept advice from. He'd seen them prescribe overdose levels of drugs and make other mistakes. He didn't name names but gave enough information to work out who he was talking about.
As said above, private prescriptions are based on the cost of the drug, and some psych meds can be expensive. When mine were changed to cheaper, less effective, generics I thought about getting the brand ones on a private script but it was unaffordable.Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.0 -
I see a private psychiatrist through the Nuffield.
I like to have control of who I see and when.
I get a referral from my GP when I want to see him (the Nuffield require a GP referral).
A copy of his report and medication recommendations is sent to my GP. I have never had an issue with getting the medications prescribed.

Shall make an appointment and speak with my GP have to see him any way for a review. Seeing a consultant via- https://www.psychiatry-uk.com/
So the prescriber would be within England.0 -
Definitely check with your GP as if you want the meds on the NHS your GP will be the prescriber.
Also make sure the psychiatrist is clear in their recommendations on increasing dosage beyond the starting dose.

The little voices haven't decided who I should see yet, but guaranteed it will be NHS as I can't afford to go private.0

Just been linked into a local Psychiatrist that can see me face to face for £250 and then £125 follow up. Hell of a money but when it comes to this well I rather.
Have a long history and feel the local team are stuck on my label from many year back. Their is research to suggest this happens and more so with my label. My label is often mixed up with another and vice versa. So stepping away from the stigma held is a massive battle.
Realised that if I don't get a clear opinion based on the NOW not years ago then I will not get the correct medication. Which is going to end up me killing myself when I actually don't want to . However when I am in a low spell like the other month. I end up doing something which was the first in a while. Had to end my job and DVLA revoked my licence.
Really complicated . Too bright a Psychiatrist once said to me. I learn so much that it eats me. So in my really good points I spend hours and hours researching . When at university I was noticed and was appearing in the top of the class 600 odd folk in Law. But when I was in my bad the work was crap and never around. Then I had access to the Psychology professors and they don't agree with my label . But the local mental health folk dismiss resent research and just fail badly when I play daft and ask probing questions. Then get awkward when I start uttering certain people within the academic world both alive and dead.
So going to somebody outside whom specialises in what I have been diagnosed with which recent research shows as time goes past the patient can no longer meet the criteria)depending on factors. Alongside having a interest in the other label that it often gets confused about might just might save my life.
I simply can't live like this as I am suffering. 30-40 years say to go for a natural death. That horrifies me! If I am correct then drugs are open to me rather than psychological input alone. Therefore my mood might just become stable rather these periods of weeks of low to the point of trying to die to being on the top of the world.0 -
Have you done any research into the guy that site linked you up with? Have you checked they work for the NHS too, for instance, as a better guarantee of their competence?Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.0
