Firstly I would contact Vanquis as I'm guessing you didn't actually default in June this year but prior to that? They should put in the correct default date as it's now on there for 6 years from that date. The older it is the better and make sure it's marked as settled! You can then have the argument with them that they agreed to not mark it as defaulted if you like, but I don't know how far you will get with this...
Ironically the 18 months wait might work out -with Brexit looming prices might drop off a cliff when the date for leaving comes nearer...DFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!

So are you not even going to try applying for a mortgage anywhere else because of that?
fcFeb 2008, 20year lifetime tracker with "Sproggit and Sylvester"... 0.14% + base for 2 years, then 0.99% + base for life of mortgage...base was 5.5% in 2008...but not for long. Credit to my mortgage broker0 -

I'd have thought that all of that is pretty insurmountable to be honest. I know us and know that we are completely sorted and never again will I have debt problems, but lenders will look at that and run a mile. I can't say I blame them!

You have a good point there about when the default date should be, I'll definitely get him to query that as the payments were being made regularly by about February 2016 if I remember rightly. I highly doubt they'll remove it, they were probably within their contractual rights to default him, even if they said they weren't going to. It's very frustrating when it was paid in full just weeks later. We also didn't receive a default notice, seeing it on his file is the first we've heard which is odd. I'm sure they have an answer for this too...
You could well be right about Brexit! Unfortunately we'll more than likely lose the house we'd seen though. What's for you won't go past you, right?!

When Vanquis promised not to 'default' him, did they do so in writing? If so, you have grounds for raising a complaint and potentially taking it to the Ombudsman. That should yield a few hundred in compensation, which ought to make you feel a bit better...0 -

Nope! It was a telephone conversation so we won't have a leg to stand on. We stupidly presumed that by making the regular payments we were OK.

Dont assume that.

have you tried speaking to an IFA they might get you a mortgage somewhere else.0

Also - in your position I would approach a broker as you are basically stabbing in the dark approaching a lender direct with your background.
This is what brokers are good at!0 -

Why wasn't the balance cleared earlier than this. Doesn't look good that you were saving for a deposit while not repaying a defaulted debt. The term default actually relates to a breach of contractual terms. Not just a default notice. By entering into an arrangement to pay you were in default. This is what will be recorded on your credit files.0
