Insurance £12/month
MOT £4/month
Spare Parts (tyres, windscreen wipers etc) £7/month
Road tax £0
Electricity £30/month
Total £53/month (not including depreciation which is probably the biggest expense!)0 -
Nephew is 24 and his insurance is almost £4k, although paying by installments so it maybe over £4k with that, close enough though.
A buspass and taxi fares will be far cheaper than the car, but he wanted one and wanted the one the insurance companies didnt think he should have and charged him accordingly.
The post above is optimistic, depreciation is the biggest expense but fails to give that figure?
My car costs less than 50p a month, not including almost everything that costs money.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
I worked out that my 1.4 Ford costs me about £150 PM for everything, allowing for 1 tank of fuel. If ever I get desperate, it will be the first thing to go.0

annually ... car tax £160, servicing & mot £100 tyres £80 depreciation £1400 fuel £750 insurance £230 odds and ends £30 adds up to about £230 a month. A hell of a lot considering I dont do many miles now. When I was working different shifts in various locations a car was essential. Now I suppose its a luxury. I have a car fund where I'm sticking 300/month, nominally to pay for my current car's costs, and to act as a 'rainy day' fund to ensure I can pay for any repairs that come up.
My current estimate is that my Honda Civic costs me about £1000/year in depreciation (this might be an overestimate as it's already 4 years old), and another £800/year to service, tax and insure. Fuel depends on how much I use it. This means the car costs me £200-250 per month.
That's the price of comfort and convenience.0 -

Sometimes I think I could do without my car. Then I remember that the only bus that passes my road is at 10 am on a Tuesday, and returns from town at 2 pm on a Tuesday. Having a car is convenient, sure, but here it's also pretty much essential.
Not quite as bad for me, but travel between by public transport between two towns in North West England takes over 3hrs each way, and costs in excess of £3000pa. The same journey by car takes 45 minutes. I could certainly do the commute with a car for less than the public transport cost, but choose to have something that costs a bit more.0 -
I ended up with a rather expensive lump after my focus failed , a nissan tino , insurance hated it (almost double the focus) ved was one or 2 band higher , since semi retiring I have not got set work patterns so I just bought a cheap motorbike , £1.75 a moth VED , £67 a year insurance , 120 to the gallon , I am saving almost £70 a mth , I am after a low VED car (c1 type) used with low insurance in the next yr or so , with the saving at the moment I should be able to buy before my 2 yrs is up on insurance NCB
bangermania can be expensive , go with the flow buy a low or zero ved car with cheap insuranceSave a Rachael

I live in Cambridge so a car is not essential, in fact is positively horrible, for going into town, but with friends and family living in other towns and/or nearby villages which are not reachable without a car, it gives me way more flexibility for travelling around.0
