Hi,

just want to let people know what happened when i left BT so other people dont get mislead like i did..

ok so I was coming to the end of my 12 month infinity contract with BT and thought i'll switch to plusnet as i was not happy with the new price. I figured it takes a while to switch. so 1 month before the end of my BT contract i signed up to plusnet 15th oct. They switched over my broadband on 1st Nov. My BT contract ends on 13th Nov

ok, so all good. i just have to pay the remaining 13 days with BT... WRONG!!!

I was sent these extra charges for leaving 13 days before the end! ( FYI i'm fine with the £7.02 as that is the remainder of the contract)
What you'll pay
You'll need to pay £103.02 for stopping your BT services. This includes:

Charges for ending your contract early - Because your service has stopped before the end of your contract, you'll need to pay £7.02 for the remaining months.

Charge for stopping your broadband - You'll need to pay about £31.00 for stopping your broadband. You can find out more about this at bt.com/ceasecharge

Charge for your equipment - You'll need to pay about £65.00 for your outstanding equipment charges. This is called 'Deferred payment for equipment' and you can find out more about it bt.com/legalstuff

this works out at about 5 months internet at the raised price!! surely this is not allowed and i should have just paid the remainder of the contract!

You were not mislead by BT.

You did not fulfill the legally binding contract that you had agreed to with BT

    Learn from your mistake!
  • You shouldn't have had to pay a cease charge as I understand it, as you are moving to a different broadband provider. The other stuff is on you for breach of contract.

im not saying i didnt read the terms and conditions... i'm warning others that It isnt what you expect... also in the contact it says you MAY have to pay for the equipment.. it does not state that you will have to or the price you will have to pay.. £65 is very steep for a router....

also for example if i got an iphone on a monthly contact. if i canceled that contact early i would just expect to pay the remainder of the contract. i would not expect to pay the remainer of the contract + the full price of a new iphone + a leaving charge...

well, i think BT are taking the !!!! charging me 50% more than the total contact for leaving 13 days early.
this is the first time i have switch ISP... so a new experience and i will be more careful next time. I wish i had had seen an equivalent of my post above before i made that mistake and hope others will see..

they also raised the price by about 40% half way through my 12 month contract... but continued to offer new customers the cheaper price...

defiantly not going back to BT.

You are happy receiving the !!!! by using them.

When they put the price up, you could have switched out without penalty.

  • We just moved to BT in work. They got the name of the company wrong. We asked for it to be corrected. We received in the same bill, a charge for cancelling the contract early and a one off charge for the new phone service. :(

We had a letter 'Another customer is taking over your line' That was us :)
We got disconnected for most of October despite telling may BT people that it was us, and they said we would not be diconnected.
Several arranged engineer visits that were not required.

And don't even get me started on call recording :(

There's no way I'd initiate a switch from BT even a week before the switch

Most people know that migration takes around 10 days.

OP , did you ask PlusNet to take over or did you cancel with BT first ? The latter would incur a cease fee as would (in common with PlusNet) moving to cable or a company using LLU.
