Vent about Tesco beef joints.

So friends coming round next day, short of time.....
Went to Tesco to buy veg, meat etc. They had no large beef joints but had some 'Roasting joints' bought two, slow cooked them and tried to carve them, they had a net round them and when I cut off the net they fell open and revealed they were not joints but some flat pieces of coarse meat rolled to look like a joint! Impossible to carve!
So anyone know what this 'joint' is called??? Is this a normal practice??

I think so,
Ring them up and complain nicely, they may just give you a lovely proper roast to compensate.
Strange but big roasts are always more tender and taste better, even better if they have a bone in.....make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Should support your local butcher instead!{Signature removed by Forum Team}0

I understand a roasting joint will probably come in packaging, like a box?
A normal joint is just on a tray?0 -
Can you link to the product on their website so people can see the box/wrapper and know exactly what you bought.
.... I feel grateful when I get 2 sausages when I go out to dinner ... you're treating your friends too well you know. Next time give them a sausage sandwich, packet of crisps and a fizzy drink and you won't have this problem0 -
Did you cook it in liquid in the slow cooker?
" roasting joints" are a euphemism for ' cheap , tough, bland'
They usually are sold by discount stores like aldi or lido as rock bottom price for a cheap roasted ' lump' , usually take about 45 minutes to cook?
The issue is , what cut of beef are they?
It's the price that's the indicator.
I hardly ever buy beef roasting joint unless reduced and my favourite is bone-in rib of beef but that's very expensive.0 -
The meat was cooked in a slow cooker and was OK but to my mind was not a roasting joint.
I have complained to Tesco and they are sending a voucher. We rarely use supermarkets but were pressed for time and passed one on our way home.
http://www.tesco.com/groceries/product/details/?id=253281146 looks like the one, it was the only type of beef joint available and they were much smaller than the one in the pic.0 -
T Enough said!
Use a butcher instead.0 -
We had no problems, although it was not that great. Quite "everyday value" IMHOI am a cow so cannot speak Bullshine but I do recognise its smell when I come upon it.0

Why take all the net off at one time? Peel off as needed. All supermarkets seem to do both styles of joint, the netted one is often cheaper.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

But my complaint is that it is a rolled up piece of flat meat, NOT a joint!
When lamb is rolled like this it is described as such, not a roasting joint!0
