VHS to DVD transfer help

I've set up a DVD/VHS combo that I borrowed from a friend so that I can transfer videos onto DVD of my kids when they were little.
It's all set up using a scart from recorder to TV and videos and DVDs can play no problem on my telly.
The problem Im having is accessing the set up menu on the recorder so that I can change the settings. When I press the set up button on the remote control, it appears for a split second on the TV screen, and then it goes all fuzzy and disappears, so I can't do anything. Then it says on the screen No Signal and goes to the blue screen.
Does anyone have any suggestions why it would be doing this?
I'm desperate to get these discs done, as the videos are of my wee girl who passed away 13 years ago, and I want to give the converted discs to family members as Xmas presents so that they can see her after all these years.

Have you asked the friend who loaned you this unit if they have experienced the same?
Does every other button on the remote work OK, and do what it's supposed to without issue?0 -
The machine has been up their loft for a number of years, but every other function works properly on the recorder. I've even tried connecting it to another TV but still have the same problem.
The menu is trying to appear, but it's like years ago when a channel wasn't tuned in properly, and the picture would jump and disappear. I can see it for a split second and can read the wording on the screen, and then it goes.
It's so frustrating because I'm so close to starting recording, but yet so far away.0 -
Have you tried new batteries in the remote?
Does it have buttons on the box itself to do the settings without using the remote?
Can you borrow a universal remote that has settings for your specific model?0 -
I put new batteries in the remote control.
I need to access the set up menu, as there are no functions on the machine to do what I need to do.
I'm wondering if it's how I've set it up that might be the problem. I've got a scart cable going from the TV to the recorder, and nothing else apart from the power cables. Does this sound okay?0 -
Maybe try a different scart cable? I suppose it doesn't do hdmi?0

If it still doesn't work, analogue DVD recorders and VHS players are on eBay for buttons ....0

If it helps there are people and companies that will transfer video onto a disc, a few in this area are people doing it for a small fee going to charities. If can't get recorder working worth seeing if any in your area.0

It sounds like the machine you have borrowed is too old and no longer fit for purpose. Storing it in a dusty loft for years will not have helped.
I'd pay for it to be done professionally. The quality will be better and the resultant discs are usually worth keeping.0 -

So, does it actually play DVDs and VHS tapes? (Don't try any precious tapes yet.) It obviously won't find a TV signal, but I'm wondering if the set-up is trying to find the time from an analogue signal, or trying to auto-tune.
If you have the model number, can you Google for an instruction manual?0 -
I transferred some VHS tapes to DVD recently and this is the way I have it set up.
CONNECT DVD RECORDER’S AV1 TO EITHER AV1 or AV2 ON THE TV (I used AV2)
CONNECT VCR AV1 TO REMAINING TV AV INPUT (choose AV2)
CONNECT DVD’S AV2 TO AV2 ON VCR
CONNECT ARIAL TO DVD RF INPUT
CONNECT DVD RF OUT TO VCR RF IN
CONNECT VCR RF OUT TO TV ARIAL IN
TO COPY VHS TAPE- PRESS (AV INPUT) ON DVD REMOTE UNTIL A2 SHOWS IN DVD DISPLAY
PRESS (AV INPUT) on VIDEO TO AV1
Remember Short Play
Also remember to change from HDD to DVD
PRESS PLAY on VHS
PRESS REC on VCR
No need to do all the above, it is set up this way to watch and record on all attached.0
