  • I fully appreciate that. I just wouldn't expect Halfords to outsource the tyres from a nearby garage just so the work is done the same day, meaning I get less for my money. Again, not illegal but morally wrong.

Anyway seems like I'll learn from my errors and move on.

Halfords I doubt would hold a large stock of tyres , even my local tyre garage had to order two in for one of my cars , Halford Auto centres are more fitting and repairs a bit like if you took your car to a normal garage a van would arrive will the parts needed for the job.

So lemme be sure I've got this right...

You took your car to a brand-name national chain for a puncture repair.
They called you and said "You need four new tyres - £300, Sir. We can do them today.".
You said "Yes, OK" without asking the brand or checking other sources for pricing.
    They did them that day.

And you're surprised that this represents poor value...?
  • 205/55/16 are the most common size tyre - I highly doubt Halfords do not carry these. I only carry a small range of tyres (i own a small garage) and even I have these in stock (40 quid fitted by the way)

Might pay to find yourself a local garage that doesn't use the fast fit model to run their business.

As a driver you should know the state of your tyres and should not need to be told that they need replacing.

If they were illegal, then this expensive mistake on your part may have saved your from a fine and points on your licence if you had been stopped by the police.

I dropped the car off and within a couple of hours received a call informing me my tyre couldn’t be repaired so I’d need a replacement, plus my other tyres were worn and would also need replacement. .

There is no indication that they were illegal.

And in the future I will sure ask such question, however I wouldn't expect to be charged more money for lesser a product (compared to their web site) from such company.

If you can buy them online for £50 each (with fitting & delivery?) then paying £75 in a garage, fitted, is pretty reasonable, especially since you'll also pay a premium for the same day fitting.

I bought tyres online, which were about £30 cheaper each, but also had to pay £14 for delivery, wait 3 days, and then still need to pay for fitting.
I fully appreciate that. I just wouldn't expect Halfords to outsource the tyres from a nearby garage just so the work is done the same day, meaning I get less for my money. Again, not illegal but morally wrong.

The reply said warehouse - they got the tyres sent over from a neighbouring warehouse so you could get them fitting right away, instead of ordering them in for a future date (maybe later that day if it was early enough, probably the following day, possibly further away than that), and that, as results in some of the premium.

So I don't think you've got a claim that you were overcharged, just that they fitted the cheapest ones without explicitly telling you that. But to be fair to them, 99% of their customers will just go for the cheapest option.

If you're worried about the quality of them, your only real option is to get an independent to fit you a new set and fire the old set up on gumtree for about half what you paid.

Whilst it's too late, it may be worth seeing if you can get access to the old tyres to see if they actually did need replaced, or any evidence from them. Your only real recourse is if you can prove with some certainty that you were duped into buying new tyres, in which case they should put the old ones back on.
It'll be uphill, because they'll have just thrown them in a pile in the yard to wait for the next collection. If you had an MOT or service recently which indicated wear levels, then you might have something along the lines of "I had 5mm of treat only 400 miles ago, there's no way they became illegal that quickly".

But in future you're best getting tyre work done in your local independent fitter (the grubbier looking the better) and staying away from these fast fit chains unless you really need to use them.

Where in the tyre was the nail? If it was within the central 75% of the tread width then their claim of not being able to repair it may be dubious too.

I keep this in the car (kit 21014) and repair most punctures myself. (Once for my car, and twice for other people).

The point is that the OP should check their tyres regularly and should already know just how much tread they have and if they need replacing without being told.

If they don't do this and regularly and check the pressures they should not be driving and deserve to get points and a fine.

The other tyres may not have needed replacing at that time but we will never know as the OP obviously didn't know what state they were in!
