Sound advice jackieblack but not an obvious thing to think of on holiday for most.

Anyway all is resolved. Got no response from Dollar to our disputing the charges. They took the money from my account yesterday so I put the matter into dispute with bank who warned it could be a long time to resolve. Grudgingly rang the US number and was asked if I could prove I wasn't in the places mentioned. Fortunately my bank card and my wife's credit card detail purchases made on those dates hundreds of miles from the alleged offences.

At that point the operative admitted the charges had come up on their "error list" and he suspected the ez-pass unit had been moved from one car to another without the change being recorded on the system. I asked if it was the case that they knew the charges might be dodgy why did they go ahead and take the money from my account? "Company Policy" -

So if you don't notice the chages, don't have evidence you weren't where they said or can't be a***d to go through their tedious system or make transatlantic phone calls at your own cost you will be charged -- even though they know it's probably a mistake on their part.

I'm told a refund will now be made within 24-48 hours.
Ath the edn of all that my advice would be:
    1. DONT RENT FROM DOLLAR! - I never will again and will warn others.
    2. Keep receipts
3 Fight your corner even if it is a time-consuming hassle.
Just because somebody is certain doesn't mean they are right!

Maybe, but I made a point of getting receipts after reading lots of complaints online about rental cars and toll charges, while researching our trip.

This was 3 years ago, so not a new (or unknown) problem.

The problem now in the states is many tolls have gone cashless and are collected by photograph.

I went through a few electronic tolls in the states that used number plate recognition or the pre-paid passes.

My rental car did not have a pass so I was expecting some toll fees charged to my card. That was in August and so far, nothing has been charged.
