Budget? If you have loads of money get her an Apple. Her parents will either a. hate you because she will always want Apple products in the future or b. love you because she will never have any problems with it and she will be able to show it off to her friends.

I wouldn't get her a laptop but a tablet with a detachable full size keyboard. More versatile and practical.
What do her parents and the school recommend as they will know what she will be needing it for so are best placed to advise you on what it needs to do (e.g. Does it need an Ethernet port as well as wireless, will she have access to a printer, does the school have a requirement that students use only Apple or only windows applications etc)
Without knowing these things your lovely gift could end up unsuitable for what she needs.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

Perhaps a minor problem in taking it to school?
I agree with this chap, should be limiting the ones in school without taking any more in.

You don't.
Kids do not really need laptops. They at most need a small tablet to access some online content.
You can buy a Windows tablet or an Android tablet depending on your budget.
You can go for a Chromebook if you still want a laptop0 -
