PC usage

Options
Hello

Can I ask, please, how much roughly - either in money terms or KWh - a PC uses if it is on 24/7?

There is no printer or scanner or anything else attached that may use extra energy - just the PC tower and (wide) screen.

A rough estimate would be fine, thanks!

Looks like an interesting, varied, thread.

By my reckoning, assuming the PC and monitor use 200W, then 24 hours a day, 365 days a year comes to about 1700kWH.

    At 12p a unit, that's about £200 a year.

Both the PC and monitor should have a label on them somewhere stating what wattage they are.

The label on a PC is useless for the purposes of calculating consumption. It gives the rating of the power supply which is usually 500watts or 600watts. It doesn't mean it will draw that sort of wattage, any more than a cooker with 2 ovens and 4 rings will draw 12kW with just one ring turned on.

Most people would surely have the PC set to go to sleep/hibernate when the are not using it.

Entirely dependent on the PC and settings; most modern PCs are quite efficient. Plug in one of those sockets that tells you the current draw, and you can work it out quite accurately.

So you have spent around 200 quid on them?

That would buy an awful lot of electricity.
