How to get a good BT deal as an existing out-of-contract customer?

I moved to BT with a great 12-month deal for fibre+calls. When the 12 months came to an end I moved to a rolling contract as I thought I was about to move home and didn't want to be locked in. But now I've established this might be a few months away and BT (and other main ISPs) will supply where I want to move.
Now, there seem to be no good fibre deals with Sky/Plus.net so I'm wondering if I lack any means to get a good deal out of them and missed my chance... previously there were great deals with plus.net in particular but these seem to have all dried up in the last few weeks. Meanwhile I assume I am paying through the nose for Fibre on a monthly basis with BT.
Should I try to get the best 12/18 month contract I can with BT, or sit it out waiting for the next great deal to come along?
I require unlimited fibre but 38Mb is fine. We don't use our landline really.

I was in the same position as you, and my deal had ended and gone up to £50+ a month. I cancelled today as I am moving house, and I got offered Unlimited Infinity 1 LR and BT TV Starter for £27. The catch was a 2 year contract.
I turned it down as apparently Virgin have just cabled the street where I am moving to and are offering their Full House package for £30 for a year.0 -
Did you have another provider's offer to hand to drive the deal or not need to? I assume the people monitor exactly what the deals are from their competitors day-by-day?
I did see Plus.net offering £27 for a similar deal (without TV) and I can get £70 cash-back. As a new BT customer I saw a £150 cashback deal...0 -
Yes the Virgin deal I mentioned.
The BT guy first offered £41, then £35, then £270 -
A good deal with BT as an existing customer is very unlikely. Even if you get an ok(ish) one financially, BT offer 12 month min terms to new customers but all existing customers have to accept 24 months. BT really are the perfect example of why you are better off putting in that little bit of effort and switching.0

In my experience, you never get a good retention offer with BT. I have tried two or three times when I have been with them, but ended up leaving as they wouldn't compete with other providers.0

But as I said, there aren't any great deals right now.
Also has some rule changed in the last couple of weeks? All the providers seem to be listing prices including line rental suddenly, I'm sure this is new.
£27pcm is the best I saw, only a few weeks ago I'm sure you could get unlimited fibre for £5 plus line rental.0 -
I usually call 0800 800 030 when my BT deal is coming to an end, and have been offered 12 month deals comparable with those for new customers. The last time, I didn't even have to pretend I was planning to leave.
Of course, it depends what you think a good deal is. BT Infinity is a premium product that isn't as cheap as some providers' products, but I want a quality connection with no traffic shaping and decent upload speed (the latter you can not get with Virgin cable).
d000hg: I'm sure it must be discussed somewhere on this forum, but yes new rules are now in force that providers shouldn't separate out line rental costs.

Never seen that but £10 was available at some parts of the year and via retentions .
Line rental was circa £19 pm before the new rules .
Home move if an ISP services the new property they may allow you to leave your current contract without penalty and start a new contract .As i understand they have no obligation to cancel the current contract without penalty .0 -
Log into your BT account and check offers, they are offering me unlimited infinity 2 for £15 + line rental , not worth me switching as max i can get is 60mpbs anyway0

BT is not a premium provider - it's pitiful.Of course, it depends what you think a good deal is.
