My son has a 5s and yep, I've bought him a battery charger. As already said, the battery is old and its an old phone that may have problems coping with various OS updates delivered since it was released.
However, if it is losing power minutes after a full recharge, or has developed another fault then I think you need to go with her to the shop, say its faulty, show them how, and ask for a refund.
Has she investigated battery saving features like turning the screen brightness down, seeing if a particular app is prone to high power useage etc .., these things can be googled.0 -
Hi, thank you for all the replies! I totally understand the battery will drain because it is old, but this phone seems to switch itself off when it is at 30% and then might stay on for 40 mins at 1%, which is totally unpredictable (and being a worried mum, I like her to have her phone when she is on a night out!) I have said to her about taking her charger and portable charger out with her, but surely for £145, she shouldn't have to?
Also, with the battery, the guys at CEX told her the warranty would not be valid unless Apple change the battery themselves!Man who run into airport turn-styles is going to Bangkok

Who is the warranty with? CEX?
I take my battery charger out with me on my 6+, 3 months old, a "£700" phone, as my battery will drain if I am using battery intensive apps.
She may have paid £145 for it, but its still a 4 year old model. The 3 year old models get £80 if you trade them in, for comparison. CEX won't have paid the old owner more than about 60-70 for it.
Yes it is expensive, but comparatively, its not expensive for a phone anymore.
If she wants a reliable phone then really she needs something a) not second hand 2) more up to date.
If she goes out on a night out with 100% battery, and isn't on her phone all night, then she should have enough battery for a call if she is in trouble.0 -

It simply won't be able to handle modern apps which are battery and data hogs. Draining 50% in an hour is normal for a 4 year old phone, sorry.
My boyfriend had a 5s until very recently (so 3 years old) and his was getting just as bad as that, he just got a battery charger to carry about.0 -

Genuine Apple replacement battery packs are about £10 on eBay, and changing them on the 5 is a 10 minute job for someone who works with tech.0
