Downgrading from O2 contract to O2 PAYG?

Hi Folks,

This is just a quick query.
I'm on O2 Online 1000 (1000 off peak mins to O2 mobiles and UK landlines + 500 texts). The flat fee is £20 a month - my usual bill comes in round £25. Is it possible to downgrade to O2 PAYG (300 texts a month for £10 top-up) without incurring a cancellation fee?

Thanks :-)

    Cheers for the reply Lofty.
The extra £5 comes from using my phone for the odd call during peak times and from occasionally texting family in the Republic Of Ireland and Italy (17.5p per text).

I guess I'll hold out til December when my 12 months is up!

Do you use mainly texts or calls? There is another option with the online payg SIM - a mixture of 100 free texts and cross-network minutes.

But I don't know if you can switch, and as lofty suggests this will only be after the initial 12 months contract period.

Perhaps you can contact Online Customer Services? I can't - the contact us form on the website does not work for me.

If it isn't possible to switch, you could get a new Payg SIM (with a different number), often for free or 99p.

I got a Samsung E800 for free with the online deal (that the missus took a shine too!). I'm currently using a Nokia 6610i that I nabbed for peanuts on eBay. I'm mainly a texter - and I got free TalkTalk calls for off peak times - I always ring landlines rather than mobiles - so I don't really need all those O2 minutes for £20 - whereas I could text to my heart's content for a tenner a month!

I'm just thinking of an idea. Most UK networks do not charge for incoming texts when abroad. If you could get your family abroad to carry an extra phone and you sent them an O2 SIM (or any other) you could text them from your included package.

They wouldn't want to send them back from that phone though; if they did the same for you, they'd end up with two phones each and you'd have three, so maybe it is a bit of a daft idea.

Once you are outside your minimum term just ring them up and say that you want to cancel your contract as you don't (or wont) be using that much and you're thinking of going on to PAYG. A friend of mine has done this twice at the end of his contracts and they send out a fee online PAYG sim on both occasions and you can then arrange with them for transfer of numbers, or alternatively, wait until the next free o2 sim online sim cards become available again.
