Smyths Toys Refund Dilemma

Is this right? I bought 4 toys from Smyths Toys, 2 of which were in a 2 for £15 deal, another cost £15 and the last item was £9.99 (so the total was £39.99). I had a voucher to get £6 off the bill if you spend over £25.

However, the £6 was split across the 4 different items, e.g. £2.25 off the £15 item, £1.49 off the £9.99 item etc, instead of £6 off the total.

I then wanted to return the £9.99 item but as it had been discounted by £1.49 the store would only refund £8.50.

My point was that even without the £9.99 toy my bill would still be over £25 so the £6 discount would still apply. I don’t understand why the system split the discount across all items instead of taking it off the final amount.

Any guidance or should I just drop it & start shopping at Toys R Us?

Why not return all the items, get back what your receipt states you paid and buy them again minus the one you didn't want, might be easier.

If the discount was spread across all itms then you are getting back what you paid , whats the problem.

I think the OP means that the store assumed the discount to be spread. Usually, if you have a voucher which says '£6 off a spend or £25 or more' it means £6 off the total bill, but as the OP says, with the three items, the total still qualifies for £6 off .

If the voucher did just say '£6 off a spend of £25 or more', with no comment about spreading I would object.
  • I wouldn't waste too much time over £1.50 if I'm honest. Move on.

It seems to be the norm for a lot of stores now to do this.

The same thing happened to my daughter recently in Macays. She asked if she could return them all and buy back the other items and they refused saying they would not be put back on the shop floor for 24 hours.

As one of the items was the last one in the sale she had to return just the item and keep the others.

Had she known she would have bought the item she was not sure about on its own.

The amount is small, but an offer of percentage off the total is not the same as a fixed amount off a spend above a stated level, so I would complain, on principle, about the interpretation, as this is misrepresentation.
  • The same thing happened to me today, I am fuming! They gave me the full refund £2.48 disputed!) but made me feel like I was trying to swindle them and that they were doing it as a one-off as a favour to me and not just refunding money I was actually entitled to!
