Sharps Bedrooms - ruined carpet & waste material left behind

Hi There

My girlfriend and I have recently bought a new house and had the furniture company Sharps Bedrooms Ltd fit 3 new wardrobes.

I would like to raise a complaint as the wardrobe fitter pulled up our brand new carpets and has damaged them in the process.

They have also dumped a large amount of cut-off and waste material at the side of my new house and left it there (I would estimate 20-30% of the overall materials used)

My complaint is regarding the fact that I have paid a premium pricetag for a premier, reputable brand and they have discarded 20-30% of the materials I have paid for, also the damage to the carpets and the waste material being left on my property blocking access to my back garden.

I have written 2 complaint emails to Sharps customer service with no reply.

Is there an official body with whom I can take this complaint further? What are my rights in this matter? Are these valid complaints?

Any help would be very welcome

Thanks

  • If they are fitted wardrobes then the carpet would have need removing to install the actual wardrobe, As for the damaged carpet then yes take a complaint up with them and for the waste that you say is around 20-30% this has no bearing on anything as it would happen anyway, Removing it on the other hand should have been done prior to leaving the property on the final occasion.

I'd suggest you look at writing in once more with your issue of the damaged carpet and removal of rubbish only if that cost you money and advise that you want it put it right, Give them a fair time frame on this and state that if they chose to ignore you and or do nothing then you will take legal action to recover any expenses you have outlaid.

I don't think the costs would be a huge amount having the carpet sorted and the removal of a small amount of rubbish so a Court claim would not be big money if you have to go that route.

Have you read the terms and conditions relating to your contract?
Does it say anywhere in there about removal of waste?

My understanding is that all waste is left for the householder to dispose of.

I can foresee a thread along the lines of "my fitted wardrobe installer stole my property. I paid for all the materials and the carpet but the installer has taken them away. Who do I complain to?"

Well you still have them, if you can find a use for the offcuts they are at the side of the house. Maybe that's why he left them there after all as you said you paid for them. It was actually pretty good of them to leave than at the side of the house rather than messing up your new bedroom.
  • Technically would all the off cuts not be your's? after all you have paid for it.
  • FOLLOWUP: Thanks for the help everyone. After a number of discussions with Sharps they have now paid to have the waste material removed, replaced the damaged carpets and agreed to a 10% discount on the final price of the wardrobes.

FYI: Sharps company policy for orders north of the border changed last year. It is policy now to provide excess/extra material for those orders due to logistics and any materials damaged in transit - which I was assured the customer did NOT pay for - yet when i threatened legal action I was given a 10% discount which is "coincidentally" the rough value of the excess raw materials? Make of that what you will.
