Private landlords

Anyone know where I can find private landlords to rent a property. I've rented privately for the past 3 years and looking to move to Torquay or Dawlish area. Don't want to go with estate because they charge to much to check references etc.

It would be places like Gumtree and local papers plus shop window adverts for ones that do no go through the EA.0

The other side is that with a letting agent you at least know the LL is legitimate to some degree.
There are many people who use gumtree to cash in on deposits before doing a runner0 -
Keep looking on Rightmove, Zoopla etc. There are on-line agencies like Upad and Openrent which private landlords use to advertise on RM etc.
The advert should say that it is a private landlord.
Also, try Streelife. You can start a thread saying what you are looking for.0 -
Almost all of the properties advertised through letting agents ARE being let by private landlords.
Your references still need to be checked, whether you find the property through an agent or directly from the landlord. That's not free to anybody.0 -

My friend is a private landlord and he advertises via Upad.
He does not charge tenants any fees at all as long as they pass the checks (they pay for the checks but then deduct the fees from their first month's rent).0 -

We advertise on Rightmove and Zoopla and the only fee that we charge is for the tenancy deposit scheme.Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop0 -

Exactly, a lot of private landlords don't charge any fees at all because it attracts the best tenants and it shows prospective tenants that they are not after penny.
A lot of private landlords are greedy and this allows the good ones to differentiate themselves from the rest as well as having an advantage over the letting agents.0 -
The landlord chooses to absorb the costs as a marketing incentive.0
