Gas meter position

I own a lease on a flat, a couple of years ago the gas meter had to be moved from under the stairs at the rear of the property to the front - as seen on most other properties, this was due to the fact that the occupation of the building was increased from three to five, contravening gas regulations ( the pipe went under the property) due to a semi absent landlord the position was agreed between leaseholders as national grid had cut off the gas - we paid to have the gas reconnected etc - no problem. However when it comes to selling the property the landlord says he is in dispute with us because he wants the meters back in their old 'illegal' position. I have contacted national grid asking for a letter from them stating that the old position is 'illegal' and that the meters cannot therefore be returned but they keep saying it has nothing to do with them, I have already had a sale fall through because of this and cannot find anyone in NG who will take responsibility- where can I go with this?

What did your lease say about moving amenities and/or utility supply pipes not in the building? Normally you would need the freeholders permission.
But...what is done is done...
Without coming to a compromise there is little room for either of you to manoeuvre.
You need legal advice I think.
I would contact LEASE. It is the leasehold advisory service. A government backed free and impartial advise service to help leaseholders with legal issues

Edit....interestingly LEASE has changed slightly since I last used it. They have an initial 15min free telephone advice service. The website has changed too.
I will investigate.
In the mean time, give them a try. Just ensure you have all the info with you do avoid delays in your 15min free window.
Edit: Just in case you wanted more information about lease:
