Amazingly I've found on several recent tech purchases (dect phones, a router, a camera, a tablet) that Currys/PCW were matching web prices so it cost no more to go there and I have one within easy walking distance. Still check pricing and avoid any add-ons naturally.

With no dedicated pick up point and often having to order into store it doesn't really save much time though.

That is not true, I have FTTC with three providers, Sky, BT and Plusnet; only the Sky setup had an Openreach modem and separate router. When I switched to BT the router supplied (HH5) worked without the modem. The same is for my current Plusnet setup too.

May be true for you, but I was with Plusnet and FTTC for some time and the Technicolor router would NOT work here without a BT modem: tried it. Incidentally, I had 2 of these BT modems die on me. Each time, the BT engineers gave me another. The 3rd one was working when I last used it.

I now have Sky Q and no BT modem.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

Denwyn the reason why you had a separate BT modem and that horrible Plusnet router, is because you have the FTTC fibre service and not the FTTP service:
Also not true I have been on Plusnet FTTP fibre for over two years and have a BT Hawaii modem and a Plusnet Technicolour router.
