Fibre routers

Have Plus net fibre with BT Open reach modem and Plus net technicolour router. Wi fi not very good with router. Looking for recommendations for router replacement up to £60 to replace technicolour router but still keep open reach modem. Good wi fi signal essential. All advice appreciated.

Do you have both the Openreach modem and the technicolour router connected somehow to the broadband cable?

If so, this could be your problem, as both are wireless capable.

There is probably conflict between the 2 and they are probably broadcasting both on the same channel.

Try removing the old Openreach modem and turning it off and using just the Plusnet router and this should solve your problem.

If you must have both of them working, try going into the Openreach's modem settings and turn off wifi alltogether and this should improve performance of the Plusnet device.

OP doesn't have two routers, he has the old BT setup with a separate modem and then a router connected to that.

I don't think PlusNet are as annoying as Sky and stop you using your own. Just get a router with a built in vDSL2 modem and replace the pair with the one. Checked the PlusNet site and they say you can use your own.

No idea what a good router is however other than the odd Draytek I have used but they are on the expensive side.

I bought a used BT homehub 5 - cheap, easy to configure (guide on plusnet forum), does away with the separate modem and wireless now reaches upstairs in my house.

I believe the new BT superhub (6?) can work but they're a bit pricey yet

We also subscribe to PlusNet fibre broadband and had the two router units.

A while ago we were experiencing terrible problems with internet access. The pages took ages to load, along with other problems.

We phoned PlusNet and they replaced the old units with one single unit. This works perfectly and we have no further problems.

It might be worth contacting them to see what they suggest.

Been offered a Plusnet One router for £20, may try this, only draw back from what I can see is you can't change DNS. I had problems with Plusnet DNS when I bought new computer from PCSpecalist in July, Browsing was very slow,in fact the old PC was much faster. Was given a couple of DNS settings to try which sorted it. Willing to give it a try for £20 though, if it's no good I'll stick it on eBay. Would an all in one Modem/ router be better then, seems a waste to dump Open reach modem ??
  • You can set DNS on Windows/Linux/MacOs independant of the router

When I had problems with two box Plusnet fibre in July I did contact them, asked for new router, think they wanted almost £60 Inc postage, really annoying as I had been a Plusnet customer for many years. Not really helpful, did a few resets on router, but changing DNS sorted it. I will more than likely move away from Plusnet, but can't do it till contract ends in August, otherwise it would cost me £140 in cancellation fees. Prob switch to BT.

Denwyn the reason why you had a separate BT modem and that horrible Plusnet router, is because you have the FTTC fibre service and not the FTTP service: I had the FTTC Plusnet service until recent change to Sky.
    This explains:
    http://deucethemes.com/whats-the-difference-between-adsl-vdsl-and-fibre-internet/

FTTC is Fibre To The Cabinet, after which there is a copper line to the home. FTTP is To The Premises: a full fibre service staright to the home.
When I had FTTC, I got so sick of the weedy Technicolor router that I swapped it for a TP-Link 9980 VDSL router, which cuts out the BT modem and is a fully functioning modem/router, specifically for FTTC situations. Here's the 9980:
    http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/details/cat-15_TD-W8970.html

I had other issues with Plusnet which eventually drove me to Sky, including the fact that Plusnet had organised 5 engineer visits which failed to find the main problems. Sky organised one visit which found and dealt with the faults.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.
