Extension - customary to give a gift?

We've just had quite a substantial extension added to the house. The joiners have been here for 3 months and due to finish on Fri. We've never had anything like this done before so we're wondering if it's norma to give a token thank you gift at the end? We were thinking a few crates of beer at the end to share amongst him and his boys but is that OTT?

  • I don't think it is ott to offer something if you are both happy with the service and work carried out, I have done numerous jobs throughout my life from window fitting to upholstery work on sofa's and numerous times we were given things mostly money but also drink to, It makes you feel that you did a good job and kept a happy customer.

    Brilliant, thanks. Beer it is!

I'd wondered about money too but a) I'm not sure how many it would be divided by as there were a few teams b) I always feel a bit weird 'tipping' a business owner!

I think what ever you give any tradesman they would be grateful as it is a rare thing and I would say that one in ten gave us something when I did work in peoples homes, It is up to you what you give and for us we always divided everything up between the amount of people on site fairly, I would presume that the main contractor would divide a few cases up by his team alone unless they are all non drinkers. I'd find that hard to see though.

No need for me to comment here then as all my Scottish friends are quite keen drinkers shall we say. :)

I'd say that payment in full is quite a nice gift at the end of a big job! If you're getting a case of beers then don't get muck... give them something foreign and fancy!

I wouldn't wish cheap beer on anyone :-)

There are plenty of good British beers, it's not all muck.

Or did you mean English beer.

Good man! If you're happy with their work, it's great to show some thanks, beer is a good idea! I don't think it is weird to want to do that.

It's all relative. Britain does good beers compared to Tenants and Boddingtons. The euros know how to make the stuff properly though!
