Open fire advice

Oh, that's good advice, cheers! I have been cleaning it all up then following morning. Is it worth putting a plate of some sort across the grate, to stop the ash falling through??0
-
Some multi-fuel stoves do exactly that, so it's definitely worth a try.
On my wood-burner I only take out ash maybe every two weeks _at most_.0 -
I'll keep an eye out for a bit of scrap sheet, but until then, I'll leave the ash bed.

Cheers!0 -
Just wanted to say cheers for the advice; it's a great fire now.
I cut a piece of sheet steel to size, and bought a maul to halve the wood. Fire burns very happily, the room doesn't smell like a bonfire, and I feel very manly smashing wood into pieces.0
